Text 1. Airport construction machines

Modern airport construction machinery is represented by a great variety of machines from bush saws and stumpers up to powerful cranes. Construction machines can be divided into five groups: machines for site preparation, machines for building man-made constructions, machines for earth-moving (excavation), machines for soil compaction, machines for pavement and base construction.

Machines for site preparation are classified according to their purposes (motorized saws, bush saws, stumpers, rippers), way of building-block design (suspended, trailed) and arrangement of operating parts (front, rear).

Each machine is used for performing different kinds of work. For instance, motorized and electric saws can be used for tree felling and clearing construction sites in Siberia and the Far East. The main machines used in these regions are bush saws, stumpers and rippers.

A bush saw is a suspended piece of equipment installed on a tractor for cutting shrubs and scrubs. The main workpiece of a bush saw is a wedge-shaped blade with cutting knives mounted in the lower part.

A stumper is also a suspended piece of equipment. It is used for rooting out stumps and large stones and moving them at a short distance. The main purpose of a stumper is to prepare the site for a future airport.

A ripper is either suspended or trailed type equipment installed on a crawler tractor. It is used for ripping coarse soils as well as frozen ones.

A bulldozer-ripping aggregate is designed both for excavating and grading works on different soils. The aggregate consists of a haulage tractor, bulldozer equipment mounted at the front and ripper equipment behind the tractor.
