From the history of telegraph

The first teleprinter in the world was developed by an outstanding Russian scientist Jacoby in 1850. It was he who invented the first relay telegraph transmission set. Six years later a teleprinter with the transmitting speed of about 120-180 symbols a minute was constructed.

In 1856 our countryman Slonimsky invented the method of simultaneous opposing transmission of several messages through one wire, which is called the duplex method.

In 1874 Baudot (France) constructed a teleprinter, which permitted to conduct simultaneously several gearings through one wire. But this device was very complicated and huge. The necessity to modernize the teleprinter resulted in the creation of a new class of equipment, known "start-stop" teleprinters.

Benjamin Franklin, an American who is famous for his interesting and useful inventions, published his ideas about electricity in 1752. Scientists in many countries became interested in this wonderful form of energy. They wanted to find the answer to a very important question: could electricity be used to develop a fast efficient system of long distance communication? Experiments proved that electricity could travel instantly over very long piece of wire. But a note that was written on a piece of paper couldn't be put into a wire! How could electricity be used to send a message?

A Danish scientist discovered that electricity could move a needle from left to right, and that the needle could paint letters on a piece of paper. Then a German government worker made up a code system that could be used with an electric needle. In 1837 the English scientist sent a message at a distance of more than 1.6 kilometres.

Many attempts had been made by scientists of different countries before the first transatlantic message was sent from Newfoundland to Ireland. It happened on July 27, 1866.
