Сделайте из двух предложений одно.
The city was founded as a fortress in 1589. It guarded the trade route along the Volga.
Tsaritsin was originally built on the island. The city took its first name from that island.
Volgograd is the centre of one of the largest regions in the Russia Federation. Its area is 114 000 sq. km.
There are more than 130 peants and factories of different types. They produce tractors, steel, aluminium, oil products, timber, ceramics and various consumer goods.

The Volgograd Region lies in the south-east of Russia at a point where the steppe meets the semi-desert of Central Asia.
Known as Sary-Chin, or Yellow Sand to the Tatars, the island still exists today and can be seen from the Central Embankment.
The Volga has always been of great importance for Russia as a trade route. Along its banks have come caravans of Russian, Persian, Bukharan, Armenian and other merchants. The Pavlov House was defended by 24 fighters for 58 days.
Volgograd is one of the major industrial centres of Russia specialising in the production of tractors, iron, steel, timber, oil products, ceramics and various consumer goods.
The tractor industry has made a significant contribution to the country’s home as well as foreign trade.
The development of industry, transport and trade in Volgograd has a decisive influence on the standard of living of its citizens.
