The Battle of Stalingrad.

In summer 1942 the German high command concentrated powerful forces on the south-western front with the intention (намерение) of pushing (откинуть) back the Soviet troops, moving into the large bend of the Don, and then storming Stalingrad. They were then to mop up the Caucasus and take Moscow.

In the Don and Volga steppes began on of the greatest battles in the Second World War - the battle of Stalingrad. It was fought over a territory of 100.000 sq.km. and continued with unabating (неослабляемый) fury (жестокость) for six and a half months. The battle in its various stages involved on both sides more than two million men, over 2.000 tanks, some 26.000 guns and mortars (смертоносное оружие) and more than 2.000 planes.

Soviet people realized that Stalingrad would decide the fate (судьба) of the country and all it had gained from the revolution. «Fight to the Death!» and «Not one step back!» was the order given out in that critical year.

The Soviet troops fought selflessly (бесстрашно) against overwhelming odds (ошеломляющее неравенство) but were forced back to the left bank of the Don. But the German attempt (попытка) to take Stalingrad by storm had failed (не удалось). On August 23rd. German tanks supported by motorized infantry (пехота) units broke through the Soviet lines and reached the Volga north of Stalingrad. On that day the enemy (врач) carried out saturation (насыщенный) bombing of the city, flying up to 2 thousand sorties (вылазка). Millions of bombs rained down upon the city.

Thousands of houses and blocks of flats were destroyed in the heavy bombing, and consequently the civilian population suffered heavy casualties (несла большие потери). Approximately 40 thousand people died and more than 150.000 were wounded (раненный). They took shelter (скрывались) in the gullies (овраги) and in the basements (подвалы) of houses. By the end of August the population had been reduced (уменьшилось) to 400.000.

For the next 143 days Soviet troops fought heroically for Stalingrad, street by street, house by house, staircase by staircase.
