Mercury is the only metal that keeps its liquid form at normal temperatures. It is possible to pour mercury from one vessel to another in exarctly the same way that is it possible to pour water. Because of this, people for a long time were not certain that mercury was a true metal. The silver-white substance was known to the ancient Chinese and Hidus. It has been found in Egyptian tombs dating back to 1500 B.C.
One ancient Greek writer desecribed the metal as ‘liquid silver’, and even today it is often called quicksilver. Mercury is a very valuable metal. It is used widely in the making of many useful drugs and medicines. Large amounts of mercury are also used in mixing paints, in making explosives, and in manufacturing electrical and scientific apparatus. Mercury is perhaps most commonly used known for its use in thermometers. It is the substance that expands of contracts according to changes in temperature. Occasionally mercury is found in free state among rocks. More often however,
It is found mixed with sulphur in a beautiful red ore called cinnabar.
