The company

Historically, the basic unit of the fire department is the company. It is a team of firefighters with devices necessary to perform a specific function at the scene of fire. This basic unit consists of engine, ladder and rescue companies. The company officer is usually a captain who is responsible for all activities of the company. The captain may have a number of lieutenants to assist with the tasks.

The engine company provides water delivering, hoseline stretching and fire extinguishing in vehicles. The fire engine is equipped with a sufficient fire hose, a water pump capable of delivering from 750 to 2000 litres of water per minute, a water tank and other tools and appliances to accomplish (виконувати) this task.

The primary purpose of a ladder company is to reach and rescue occupants trapped in burning or destroyed buildings, to provide ventilation and overhaul functions (функції ретельного огляду).
