The americans

People often develop stereotypes when they are unable to obtain all the information. Unfortunately, some stereotypes can be offensive. It happens when we gather second-hand information from other sources and get a distorted picture.

Generalizations about nationalities are usually not welcomed, even when they are basically accurate. To be able to make fair judgments, we should travel and learn foreign languages, as travel broadens the mind and liberalises our outlook. Only then we can find what a country and its people are really like. And it may turn out that foreigners are not so very different from us after all.

Yet, some stereotypes can be favourable and complimentary.

But the fact remains that the world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike.

American society is composed of people from many social, cultural, ethnic and national backgrounds. This plus the varied geography within the USA creates a culture of such a diversity that it’s difficult to generalize American culture.

Americans are said to value individualism quite highly. They strive for individuality and individual rights. They tend to appreciate individual goals and success which can lead to a competitive society. Competition on sporting activities, workplace, social life and even conversation is a natural part of the American culture.

They have a reputation for being hard-working and ambitious people.

Americans are described as outgoing, friendly, hospitable and sociable people. They tend to have many casual acquaintances, but it takes a long time to build a genuine friendship.

There is no denying the fact, that Americans are incurable optimists. They look on the bright side of life and try to hope for the better.

Americans are viewed upon as trend-setters in lifestyle. Things that appeared in the USA soon take hold in Europe.

Americans are famous for their love for new things. They love change and call it “the spirit of adventure”. Time moves quickly in America and people are constantly on the move. They live according to a schedule and seem to be always in a hurry. That’s why one can call Americans time-conscious.

But at the same time Americans are often considered to be narrow-minded because they lack knowledge about other countries and people. Another typical feature of Americans is that they are materialistic. Time is money, they say and believe that material possessions are all that matters in life. Sometimes foreigners say that Americans are rude and always speak their mind, if they don’t like something.

The British are considered to be conservative, they love familiar things. They have a sentimental attachment to older times, value symbols of tradition and stability.
