The kinds of fast food that are popular nowadays and the eating places where we can find it (“Hot Dog”, “Coca-Cola”, “Eating Out”, “Fast Food”, “Burger Palace”)

Introduction

Every day people all over the world consume food, because we all need energy just simply to live. Some food even cheers people up, and there’s the saying: “Somebody eats to live, and somebody lives to eat”. There is food which is healthy, and the one with lots of additives that don’t do any good to our bodies. Anyway, I’d like to talk about the kinds of fast food that are popular nowadays and about the eating places where we can find it.

Main Part

Well, from time to time a large number of people consume such fast food as hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, Coca-Cola and many other kinds. By the way, originally Coca-Cola consisted of coca leaves and coca nuts, and it was sold in drugstores as an all-purpose medicine. But the exact ingredients used in the drink now and their quantities are not know, because the Coca-Cola company keeps its recipe a secret. And it is also rather interesting that in its home country of Germany, the hot dog was called the frankfurter, after a German city Frankfurt. When people started to sell frankfurters in the United States, they began to call them “dachshund sausages”. And only after one cartoonist had drawn a bun with a dachshund inside, people started to use the new name “hot dog”.

Well, as to the eating places where fast food can be found, they certainly have some advantages. To begin with, it should be quicker, and despite constant long queues that people are often faced with, the service is always incredibly fast, what I wouldn’t say about most of the restaurants. Besides, the prices are more or less reasonable, and that is definitely great. Especially, when are a student, and you don’t have enough money, almost all the time, it can be rather pleasant to save money on fast food and then to spend it on fashionable clothes.

Nevertheless, fast food places do have some distinct disadvantages, and the biggest one is that the food has lots of additives. Thus it cannot be healthy at all. In addition the choice of items is not very extensive. And the menu is limited to a variety of hamburgers, to say nothing of a great selection of milk-shakes. From my point of view, fast food establishments obviously cater for young people in a hurry. Although it’s a quick and efficient way of taking nourishment, you would not go there for a quiet evening with a friend.

Conclusion

And in my opinion, it’s up to everybody what he or she eats. We just need to remember that we are what we eat. One wise person even said: “Tell me what you eat, and I’ll tell you what you are”.

English food and the qualities it is often criticised for (“English Food”)

Introduction

There are a great number of countries in our world, and each has its own traditions, customs, habits, language, and, of course, cuisine. In Greece you eat Greek food, in France – French food, in Italy – Italian food, but it is so difficult to find English food in England.

Main Part

Indeed, in London it is easer to find Indian, Chinese, Portuguese, Turkish, Lebanese, Japanese, Russian, Polish, Spanish restaurants than English ones. And it is not only in restaurants that foreign dishes are replacing traditional British food. In every supermarket, sales of pasta and pizza are booming. And foreigners consider English food to be unimaginative and unambitious, because they believe a chance to experience English cooking is to go to McDonalds Hamburger restaurants and Wimpy Bars. But the British know that such conclusions are inexcusable. And they are completely right.

The weather has a very important influence on British cooking. The good old British rain gives them rich soil and green grass and it means that Englishmen’s basic ingredients, when fresh, are so full of flavour that people have no need to devise sauces and complex recipes to disguise their natural taste. Plus, English food doesn’t lend itself to preparation at the restaurants. Thus it can found at home, where it is possible to time the dishes to perfection. For instance, Sunday lunch in England is synonymous with roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. And such dishes as haggis and shepherd’s pie are also thought to be British. Besides, we shouldn’t forget that it is still possible to taste some traditional English food in cafes. I mean cream tea and jelled eels, mash and licor. The latter dish is a traditional lunch mostly served in cafes in the East End of London.

Conclusion

So, the British people indeed became tourists in the restaurants of their land. Surely, food is as much a part of every country’s culture as its landscape, its language, and its literature. But if somebody is of the opinion that cooking British food is like speaking a dead language, he is definitely mistaken.

The attitude to shopping between teenagers and adults and their tastes in clothes (“The Cat Ate My Gymsuit”)

Introduction

A Roman comic playwright Terence once said: “There are as many opinions as there are people, and each has his own correct way”. We observe the same situation when we speak about shopping. Some people love shopping, and some just can’t stand it. Besides, the attitude to shopping more or less depends on a customer’s age. By the way, there is a nice story in our reading comprehension book, which tells us about mum and daughter’s visit to the shop. And on the example of it I’d like to compare the attitude to shopping between teenagers and their parents and their tastes in clothes.

Main Part

Well, the girl, named Marcy, hated to go shopping. She loved clothes, but they always looked awful on her, because the teenager was stout. So Marcy couldn’t wear skinny tops, and the clothes that expected people to have a waist. When the girl founded something she liked, they never had it in her size. It was horrible. The teenager had to buy things in “Chubbies” section. And she just loathed, hated and abhorred this fact. Marcy even suggested giving out paper bags to wear over your head while you are shopping at the “Chubbies” section. Anyway, the girl preferred jeans and pants suits to dresses and all these kinds of stuff. Well, and the things were quite opposite with Marcy’s mum. She was skinny and did like dresses. But I must admit that the woman understood her teenage-daughter. And I think it would be unfair not to mention the saleslady. She was what the store people called a “stylish stout’, but Marcy considered the woman to be a “senior blimp’. Nevertheless, the saleslady could understand why the teenager got upset when she shopped, because she used to be that way herself. It means that woman’s attitude to shopping and clothes had changed when she became older. Thus she realised that every woman is beautiful, every female has gorgeous features, and women just need to learn how to underline their best features and how to hide their little drawbacks.

Conclusion

I also believe that going shopping may be not very pleasant or interesting, but we have to deal with it, whether we like it or not, because it’s a necessity.
