Первая: Certainly. Moreover, his further success persuaded Kutuzov in efficiency of partisan

war and he promoted it. Да, конечно. А потом быстрые его успехи убедили и Кутузова в целесообразности партизанской войны, и он не замедлил дать ей более широкое развитие.

Жена: I’ve heard they captured two thousand French soldiers, ruined the French stabling with

horses, attacked and defeated a French detachment, and finally, occupied Grodno. Is it true or just a rumor?

Еще я слышала, что под Ляхово он вместе с другими партизанами взял в плен двухтысячный отряд ген. Ожеро; затем под г. Копысь он уничтожил французское кавалерийское депо, рассеял неприятельский отряд под Белыничами и, продолжая поиски до Немана, занял Гродно. Это правда или лишь слухи.

Жена: The war has taken a truly national character. Have you heard how ordinary people

defend Russia? Война приняла по истине народный характер. Вы слышали как простые люди защищают Россию?

Первая: What do you mean? Что ты имеешь в виду?

Жена: The other day the Countess has told me about two peasants. One is a Gerasim Kurin –

who organized a detachment of 5,500 other peasants, and fought with the French. Another one is Vasilisa Kozhina. She captivated quite a few Frenchmen by herself.

На днях мне графиня рассказала про двоих крестьян. Некий Герасим Курин – крепостной, организовал отряд из 5,5 тысяч крестьян, громил французов. А еще крестьянка Василиса Кожина лично пленила не мало французов.

Первая: What? A woman at war? Что? Женщина на войне?

4. Сцена с Шурочкой и генералом Появляется Шурочка ей навстречу раненный солдат

Шурочка: What’s happened? Where are you going? Что случилось? Куда вы?

Солдат: We are leaving Moscow. That’s the order. Мы оставляем Москву, таков приказ.

Шурочка: But how can you? It is Moscow! Но как же так? Разве можно? Москва?

Солдат: We had to do it. You know, things we have are not in the best condition. We had

retreated by the 3d of September to the village of Borodino, the further retreat meant the surrender of Moscow. Kutuzov decided to give a decisive battle. Only we had a few weapons. It began on September 7. After nearly two days of battle the Russian army suffered heavy casualties, and Kutuzov ordered to retreat to Mozhaisk determined to save the army. On September 13 in the village of Fili Kutuzov ordered the generals to retreat. On the next day we passed through Moscow. And after that Napoleon occupied the city.

Пришлось, ничего не поделаешь. Вы же знаете, дела у нас не в самом лучшем положении. Мы к 3 сентября отступили к деревне Бородино, дальнейшее отступление подразумевало сдачу Москвы. Кутузов решился дать генеральное сражение. Только у нас было мало оружия. 7 сентября все началось. После почти двухдневной битвы русская армия понесла тяжёлые потери, и Кутузов приказал отступить на Можайск с твёрдым намерением сохранить армию. 13 сентября в деревне Фили собрались генералы и Кутузов приказал отступать. 14 сентября мы прошли через Москву. Мы отступаем, а Наполеон занимает опустевший город.

The French, that stream of force, emerged.

Beneath our feet the ground felt swinging.

…Two days passed, but we still kept fighting,

Got ready for one more day fight.

Breathless and weary, bleeding and dying

We were when the battlefield sank in the night.

That was the time for heroes’ resting,

For cleaning up and sharpening swords.

We heard the foes, by us detested.

They were exclaiming triumphant words.

Before the sun lit the horizon,

All regiments had begun to move.

That movement was immensely noisy.

And there was no one to reprove.

There came the colonel on the horseback,

We knew him always to be brave

His eyes were bright, moustache was jet-black…

Though finally there he found his grave…

But at that moment he looked fearless,

We saw great courage in his gaze.

He turned to us and raised his saber

And shouted out a historic phrase.

“Hey guys, - he said, - do you remember

That Moscow is behind of us.

We’d better die than to surrender,

We’ll not allow them to pass.”

And we all gave a solemn vow

And kept that vow in the fight

The ground did go up and down.

No one knew if t’was day or night.

Banners, and fire and sparkling in chaos.

You’d hardly see the battle of that kind.

The blood was streaming, and balls of cannons

Couldn’t fly over dead bodies in piles.

That was the day when we showed the foes

What all the valor of the Russian is worth.

The roar of volcanoes and the heat of the stoves –

It did look like Hell, and the end of the earth.

The raging sound of a drumbeat was heard.

We were encouraged to make foes defeated.

We clenched your teeth. With the final effort

We rushed into the battle and the foes retreated.

There used to be courageous people

Moscow was left due to the God’s will.

Наполеон: Well! I've reached the goal. Moscow is conquered! But it’s not what I wanted. I captured Moscow without a battle. On the very first day the city was on fire, which has increased so much that I had to leave the Kremlin. The fire destroyed much of Moscow.

Ну вот! Я почти у цели. Москва захвачена! Только от этого не лучше. Я занял Москву без боя. Но что с того? Уже ночью того же дня город был охвачен пожаром, который усилился настолько, что я вынужден покинуть Кремль. Пожар уничтожил большую часть Москвы.

Oh, that Kutuzov! That sly fox! He twisted all of us round his little finger! Following his winding my cavalry lost him. He went westward off the road to Ryazan through Podolsk to the old road to Kaluga. Then at the village of Tarutino he blocked the main road running southwards, threatening my rear. My plans are failed! Moscow has been my political position!

А Кутузов! Хитрый лис! Обвел всех вокруг пальца! Сбив со следа кавалеристов Мюрата, Кутузов свернул на запад с Рязанской дороги через Подольск на старую Калужскую дорогу, куда вышел в районе Красной Пахры. Затем перебросил армию на юг к селу Тарутино. Перекрыл основные дороги в южные губернии, а также создал постоянную угрозу тыловым коммуникациям! Все идет не по плану! Москва была моей политической позицией!

Alexander isn’t going to make peace. It’s impossible to spend a whole winter in burnt Moscow without food, my army after hardship stopped being disciplined. We’d better start reparing for a retreat to our winter quarters between the Dnieper and Dvina.

А теперь? Александр на перемирие не идет. Зимовать в разорённой пожаром столице не представлялось возможным, фуражировки за пределами города плохо удаются, наши коммуникации очень уязвимы, армия после перенесённых лишений начинала разлагаться. Готовиться отступлению! Пока не из России, но на зимние квартиры между Днепром и Двиной.

On their way to the regiment they both were the witnesses of capturing the Russian general by the French. Not wasting their time they rushed to attack the French guard and managed to save the captive.

Генерал: Thanks a lot, oh my bold savior. I am immensely grateful. But how could you do it?

Благодарю вас, храбрый мой спаситель. Мою сердечную признательность примите. Но как смогли вы?

Шура: After all everything’s OK, isn’t it? Here at the headquarters you will find everything you need. But

I must be off. Excuse me, it’s the service. Всё ведь обошлось? Здесь, в штабе, вы найдете все что нужно. А мне пора. Простите, служба.

Генерал: I am the Sovereign's adjutant, Count Bolmatov. See you soon, my valiant hero. From now on,

I owe you forever. But I’m not accustomed long to be in debt. And what’s your name? Я государя адъютант, граф Болматов. До скорой встречи, мой герой отважный. Отныне, я навеки ваш должник. Но долго быть в долгу я не привык. А как зовут вас?!

Шура: It doesn’t matter, dear Count. Это, граф, неважно!
