Сколько же времени прошло с тех пор как я здесь? Месяцев 6 не меньше. А ничего не меняется. Участвовать в сражениях не допускают. Как работала курьером, так и работаю. Хотя в этом тоже есть своя прелесть. Я все новости узнаю одной из первых.

(голос из-за кулис)

I have some bad news ... After the two Russian armies had joined the chief commander of the Russian army Barclay de Tolly took offensive movement against the French in the direction of Rodney (a village near Smolensk). Napoleon took advantage of it and crossed the Dnieper and moved to Smolensk, trying to capture it. On their way to Smolensk the French were stopped for a while, by the heroic resistance of the Russian General Neverovsky. After Napoleon’s maneuver, Barclay ordered to retreat to Smolensk. But that fight gave the opportunity to bring the troop of General Rayevsky to the city.

On August 3, Raevsky had a fight against the French avant-garde. It all lasted till August 4, when the main forces of the 1st and 2nd armies came to Smolensk. The commander of the 2nd Army, Bagration thought it was necessary to give there a general battle. But Barclay de Tolly, insisted on the continuation of the retreat. He decided to give the battle at Smolensk, and the main forces should be moved across the Dnieper. The troop of general Dokhturov had to defend the main forces of the 1st and 2nd armies, withdrawing along the Moscow road.

All day on August 5, our army heroically restrained furious attacks of the French. Great fires broke out in the city. It turned into a huge bonfire of churches and houses. Hopefully, you'll never know what it's like, my dear ...

After a two-day battle we retreated and left Smolensk. The soldiers did not want to obey the order to retreat. The last detachment, leaving the city, blew up the bridge across the Dnieper. The Russian army lost in this battle 10 thousand soldiers. The number of French casualties was 20 thousand. But when Napoleon's army entered the city, there were only 10% of the houses...

Besides, after the surrender of Smolensk, Barclay de Tolly was dismissed from the post of commander in chief. But this was due to his war plan. He was replaced by Kutuzov...
