Seminar 6. THE VERB:CLASSIFICATIONS AND PREDICATIVE

CATEGORIES

1.Verb classifications: Formal (standard/non-standard), syntactic (subjective/objective, transitive/intransitive), semantic (terminative, factive). 2.The predicative categories of the verb: person/number, tense, mood.

TASKS

A.Be ready to discuss the problems of the seminar

B.Classify the following verbs as terminative/non-terminative, analyze their definitions and identify the semantic component that points to some limit in the action or state:

To enter, to go, to spring, to jump, to fall, to sit, to throw, to sleep, to work, to exist, to love, to open, to escape, to laugh.

C. Use the following verbs in sentences to reveal their either terminative or non-terminative reading:

To write, to pour, to read, to hear, to understand, to show, to translate

D. Sum up the ways of expressing limit in the meaning of the verb (Tasks B and

C).

E. Sort out the following verbs as factive/non-factive:

To think, to know, to admit, to believe, to suppose, to notice

F. State the semantic class of the following verbal meaning (state, achievement, accomplishment, etc). Use the scheme of T.V.Bulygina’s classification:

To write, to burn, to draw, to strengthen, to climb, to communicate, to enjoy, to perform, to perfect, to smile, to sleep, to work, to flash, to bow

G. Underline the forms expresssing unreality and name them:

1.Ivory insisted that he be present 2.I wish I were ten years younger 3.He looked as if he knew about it 4.He looked as if he had seen a ghost

5.If I had a garden, I should grow tulips

6.If it hadn’t rained, I should have gone for a walk 7.I insist that he should meet us at the station

8.I wish he wouldn’t interrupt me

9.I’m telling you this so that you may write to your parents about it

10. I’m telling you this so that you can/could write to your parents about it 11.If he were to discover the truth he would never speak to us again

D.Write out the words with the function of pointing in sentences 3, 9, 10

E.Identify the part of speech for the underlined words:
