DRAMA, MUSIC AND BALLET IN BRITAIN

The centre of theatrical activity in Britain is London. There are about 50 principal theatres in professional usein or near the West End and some 20 in the suburbs.

Most of these are let to producing managements on a commercial basis but some of them are permanently occupied by subsidised companies, such as the National Theatre which stages classical and modern plays in its complex of three theatres on the South Bank of the River Thames. The former Old Vic Company, which was Britain's major theatrical touring company, has now taken up residence in the National Theatre, changing its name to the National Theatre Company. In addition the Royal Shakespeare Company presents Shakespearean plays at Stradford-upon-Avon and a mixed repertoire in London.

Outside London there are many non-repertory theatres which present all kinds of drama and also put on variety shows and other entertainments. Recently there has been a growth in the activity of repertory companies which receive financial support from the Arts Council and the local authorities. These companies employ leading producers, designers and actors, and the standard of productions is generally high. Some companies have their own theatres, while others rent from the local authorities.

Music of all kinds -"pop" music, folk music, jazz, light music and brass bands - is an important part of British cultural life. The large audiences at orchestral concerts and at performances of opera, ballet and chamber music reflect the widespread interest inclassical music..

The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, which receives financial assistance from the Arts Council, gives regular seasons of opera and ballet. It has its own orchestra which plays for the Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet. Both companies have a high international reputation. The English National Opera which performs in the London Coliseum gives seasons of opera and operetta in English. It also tours the provinces.

In 1998 the Government announced the formation of the Young Music Trust to develop the musical skills of the young with some money from the National Lottery, and donations from music charities and companies involved in music business. The national youth orchestras of Great Britain have established high standards.

There are several thousand amateur dramatic societies in Britain. Most universities have thriving amateur drama clubs and societies. Every year an International Festival of University Theatre is held.

TEXT VII

The present home of Dirty Dancing, the Piccadilly Theatre has a history dating back to its opening in April 1928. The theatre was built with a plain facade and an Art Deco style interior, designed by Marc-Henri Levy and Gaston Laverdet and in shades of green and gold – the Piccadilly retains this colour scheme to this day. Additionally, when the theatre first opened it was one of the largest in London, with the original souvenir brochure boasting that ‗if all the bricks used in the building were laid in astraight line, they would stretch from London to Paris‘!

The theatre is in a thriving tourist location just behind Piccadilly Circus, right in the centre of the capital and close to a number of other attractions and entertainment sites.Since opening in 1928, the Piccadilly Theatre has been used for a wide range of different kinds of entertainment, spanning everything from cinema through to ballet and drama. The opening production, Blue Eyes, was a musical and starred one of the most celebrated actresses of the era, Evelyn Laye, after which it was taken over by Warner Brothers and used as a cinema. This period of the theatre‘s history is notable as it was the first place in Britain to show a talking picture, a film called The Singing Fool starring Al Jolson, before reopening as a venue for live performance and drama in November 1929.Later on the Piccadilly Theatre was converted into a cabaret restaurant and reopened in 1936 as The London Casino, under which name it was renowned for its over- the-top stage shows. During the Second World War it was one of many significant London buildings to be damaged during bombings, with a German bomb landing on part of the theatre and necessitating extensive repairs in the 1950s. However, the theatre reopened once more under its present name and was recognised as a location for plays, revues and indeed musicals, making its mark by hosting the first ever London performances of A Streetcar Named Desire and Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?. The theatre was also the venue for broadcast entertainment such as the variety show Live from the Piccadilly, hosted by Jimmy Tarbuck, in the 1980s and with the Beatles recording material in the 1960s.In the 1990s the theatre moved more solidly towards musicals and dance, with Matthew Bourne‘s Swan Lake becoming the most successful commercial ballet season ever to take place on the West End stage and with later productions of musicals Spend SpendSpend, Jailhouse Rock, Guys and Dolls, Grease the Musical, and Ghost the Musical which closed in October 2012 to make way for the worldpremier of the Spice Girls Musical that closed after 8 months in the West End on the 29th June. Dirty Dancing opens at the Piccadilly Theatre on the 13th July and is booking until February 2014.

Picadilly theatre TEXT VIII

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre (RST) is a 1,040 seat thrust stage theatre owned by the dedicated to the British playwright and poetWilliam Shakespeare. It is located in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon – Shakespeare's birthplace – in the EnglishMidlands, beside the River Avon. The Royal Shakespeare and Swan Theatres reopened in November 2010after undergoing a major renovation known as the Transformation Project. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre opened on 23 April 1932 on the site adjacent to the original Shakespeare Memorial Theatre (opened 19 April 1879), which had been destroyed by fire on 6 March 1926, whose name it took. The architect was Elisabeth Scott, so the theatre became the first important work erected in this country from the designs of a woman architect. It is now owned and managed by the Royal Shakespeare Company and was renamed Royal Shakespeare Theatre in 1961.

The Royal Shakespeare and Swan Theatres are on the western bank of the River Avon, with the adjacent Bancroft Gardens providing a scenic riverside setting. The Rooftop Restaurant and Bar overlooks both the river and the Bancroft Gardens. In its original form, the theatre had a proscenium-arch stage, and a seating capacity of about 1,400 people, on three tiers (stalls, circle and balcony). Two tiers of seating were later added to the side walls of the theatre and the stage extended beyond the proscenium, by means of an 'apron'. Balcony seats could only be accessed by means of a staircase to the side of the building, separate from the main foyer and bar. The theatre has several notable Art Deco features, including the staircase and corridors at either side of the auditorium. It is a Grade II* listed building. The Royal Shakespeare Company has renovated the Royal Shakespeare Theatre as part of a £112.8m. Transformation project which included the creation of a new 1040seat, thrust stage auditorium which brings actors and audiences closer together, with the distance of the furthest seat from the stage being reduced from 27m to 15m.
