Social english Time Expressions

- Excuse me, what time is it?

- What's the time? /

Can you tell me the time?

- Yes, sure / It's ... o'clock.

- I'm sorry. My watch is wrong / slow / fast.

- Thanks./ Thank you.

- You are welcome./ Any time.

Exercise 1. What's the correct time?

Example: It's half past two by your watch. But your watch is five minutes fast.

- The right time is twenty-five minutes to three.

1. It's quarter to five by your watch. But your watch is five minutes slow.

2. It's twenty past six by your watch. But your watch is ten minutes slow.

3. It's quarter to eight by your watch. But your watch is five minutes fast.

4. It's thirty-five past one by your watch. But your watch is ten minutes slow.

5. It's seven minutes past nine by your watch. But your watch is two minutes fast.

Exercise 2. What is the difference between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.?

Look at the chart and check your answer.

00.00 - 11.59

afternoon

12.00 - 17.59

p.m.

evening

18.00 - 23.59

NOTE:

00.00 = midnight

12.00 = midday (noon)

!!! in the morning/in the afternoon/in the evening/in the daytime

BUT: at night/at midnight/at noon

Exercise 3. Match the times that are the same.

Example: 03.00 - 3 a.m. - three o'clock in the morning.

2 p.m.

three o'clock in the afternoon

2. 15.00

8 p.m.

two o'clock in the afternoon

3. 20.00

3 a.m.

eight o'clock in the morning

4. 08.00

8 a.m.

three o'clock in the morning

5. 14.00

eight o'clock in the evening

Exercise 4. What is the time? Practise saying the time.
