Belarusian education

Secondary education is compulsory in Belarus. Children start school at the age of 6 and finish at 17.

After the 9-th grade students are given a choice of either continuing their studies at the same school or entering a vocational school or trade school. Students attend such schools for the period from two to four years.

Having completed the secondary education one can become part of work force enter an institution of higher learning.

Belarus is a country with a wide network of higher, secondary and specialized secondary education establishments as well as scientific and research institutions. This allowed Republic to create its scientific and intellectual potential.

There are no medical schools or departments in the structure of Belarusian universities. Future doctors attend medical institutes.

To be admitted to an institution of higher learning, one has to pass a series of oral and written tests. Grades in the certificate of secondary education are also taken into account.

Up to the present neither schoolchildren nor students have had any choice in the selection of courses they had to take. Education in Belarus has recently been free on all levels. All institutions of higher learning were subsidized by government. Now the country is changing to a market economy. The first private schoold, gymnasiums and lycees have been founded in Minsk and other cities in attempt to revive pre-1917 traditions of Belarusian education system with its high standards of excellence.

Higher Technical Education

The rapid growth of scientific knowledge leads to increase in the number of engineering fields. Electrical, electronic, civil, power and mechanical engineering offer a lot of job opportunities. Within each of these fields, there are opportunities in research, design, development and tests, as well as management, production, marketing and sales. Demand for good engineers is high, in practically every country in the world. Engineers develop transportation systems that help people and produces move about easily. Engineers design the buildings, the system that deliver our water and electricity. Higher technical education is offered by technical and branch institutions of higher learning. The specialization of technical universities, the number of professions in which training is given and the forms of education are adapted to the changing needs of production. Learn how to handle modern equipment and analyses the results of the experiments. As a rule, students write their term papers and graduation theses on the problems of their research work. The industrial and economic success of every nation depends on its manufacturing and engineering base, and the skills and ingenuity of its professional engineers.

I`m a technical student

My name is Anton. I`m from Minsk. This year I`ve finishing school number 78 in Minsk. I think finishing school is the beginning of an independent life for millions school-leavers. They have to choose their future profession and enter vacation or technical schools, institutes or universities to get education. Actually, it is very difficult to make up one`s mind and choose one of hundreds jobs. Choosing an occupation takes time and you shouldn`t be in a hurry. Some young people choose their future profession under the influence of their parents or friend. Many young people keep their family tradition and continue careers of their parents or grandparents. In my opinion the final choice should depend on what you are interesting in. At school I was good at many subjects but my favorites ones were Physics, Math’s and Programming that`s why I made up my mind to become an engineer and enter Belarusian National Technical University. I passed the entrance examinations successfully an now I`m a first-year student of computer engineering faculty. We are living in a high-tech world in the age of information. No business is possible without computers. The number of young people who wish to enter the Technical University is very high and it grows from year to year. This shows the university prestige. The university is staffs by highly qualified teachers. Professors and lectures are always ready to help. Relations between teachers and students are friendly. Students may use the University library. I believe that after graduating from the University I will become an educated person, useful for progress of society I live in.
