Campus Life

Campus life is by no means limited to practical classes and lectures only. Athletic and recreational events, musical and theatrical performances, shows, lectures, concerts, and other cultural events are continually offered on the University campus. Generally they are open to the student body without charge.

The athletic and recreational facilities include gymnasiums, tennis courts, volleyball and socker grounds, fields and tracks, a large assembly hall and a number of recreational rooms. There are many lounges, reading rooms, classrooms, a large library open during the evening to students who want to study, relax or talk with class-mates and friends.

Staff

For administrative purposes the University is divided into a small number of faculties: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electronics, Water Resources and Soil Conservation, and faculty of Economics.

Each faculty is then subdivided into a relatively large number of departments or specialist groups, which are concerned with teaching various subjects.

The large number of students requires a correspondingly large number of staff and explains the above mentioned subdivision into specialist groups or departments. These departments include: concrete structures, architectural design and drawing, theoretical mechanics, descriptive geometry, strength of materials, physics, mathematics, environmental engineering and chemistry, foundation design and analysis, economics etc. There are also additional groups dealing with physical training, language studies and Social Sciences.

At present the teaching staff of the University numbers about 500 members: professors, associate professors and/or senior lecturers, assistant lecturers and instructors. Many of the staff have academic degrees.

In some instances, staff members from other educational institutions and specialists in professional and business fields are invited to teach courses on a part-time basis.

The University maintains close contacts with Higher Education Establishments in Germany, Poland, Great Britain, Russia, Ukraine and other countries. Within the framework of the cooperation agreements the teaching staff of the Institutions involved exchange academic experience in teaching courses to students, in writing course papers and preparing diploma design projects. Members of the staff are also invited to the above mentioned Institutions to take courses of advanced training. Our staff undertake short term and long-term training placements in the above Institutions, they also take part in conferences and workshops, carry out teaching assignments by delivering lectures and teaching post graduate courses.

The staff is anxious to enhance the quality of teaching by providing in-depth training in specialist and general engineering sciences, physics, mathematics, environmental protection, economic and social sciences, etc. The courses in various specialist disciplines are necessarily supplemented with lectures on the relevant labour protection and safety rules.

The teaching of courses is heavily supported by TV-based teaching systems, film- and slide projectors, computer-based knowledge testing systems, various teaching models and packages.
