Brest State Technical University

This University began as a Civil Engineering Institute in 1966. then it continued as Brest Polytechnic Institute. At present it is a rather large institution of higher learning in this country. The total student population is about five thousand students. Now the University offers full-time courses in several areas of Engineering and Economics. These are: civil and mechanical engineering, architecture, water supply and sewage disposal systems, road construction, maintenance of motor vehicles, business analysis and audit, finances and credits, banking, world economy and international economic relations, commerce, computer systems and networks, etc.

The University also offers postgraduate courses in the above disciplines. Besides teaching various subjects to full-time and correspondence department students the teaching staff are generally engaged to carry out fundamental and experimental research work, consulting and development work, usually on a contract basis, within the University's general fields of studies.

Since its foundation (in 1966) this Higher Education Establishment has expanded manifold, going from a student population of 320 in 1966 to the present day number of 5000. Now it is the largest technical institution of higher learning in the western region of this country.

Educational Facilities & Residential Accommodation

Now the University is housed in 8 buildings. Four of them are used for educational purposes, whereas the other four buildings are hostels (dorms). The hostels can accommodate about 3000 students, so practically all the students who are not residents of the city of Brest and are in need of lodging can take up residence in the hostels, usually 2 to 4 persons in a room. The hostels are just a five-minute walk from the University buildings, so the students living in the hostels don't have to waste (spend) too much time to get to their classrooms.

As for the educational and/or teaching facilities, such as auditoriums, classrooms, reading rooms, laboratories, workshops and their equipment, the situation is rather pressing. The introduction of the new disciplines and the rapid growth of the student population have resulted in a rather tangible shortage of accommodation and educational facilities. Now the University is taking steps to improve the situation and to further develop its educational facilities to meet the increased requirements. Efforts are continuing to provide more classrooms and labs by reconstructing and utilizing the existing facilities as well as by making capital investments in new premises and high-tech equipment.
