Special-interest magazines
Special-interest
magazines can be found on almost any subject including body-building,
photography, fishing, electronics, computing and the paranormal. They
contain detailed or technical information and are aimed at
enthusiasts who do the activity.
Regional
magazines
in the US, e.g. Alaska
and
New
York Magazine, contain
articles about a particular state or city. In Britain county
magazines describe mainly upper-class social events.
Trade
magazines
are aimed at people who work in various industries. Some, like
Billboard
for
the music world, are famous, but most, like Farmweek,
are
known only to people in the trade.
Professional
journals
are for people working in a particular profession or academic field
and contain articles about research or professional practice.
Buying magazines
Magazines
can bethought in supermarkets and bookshops, at bookstalls and news
stands, and in Britain at a newsagent's. But it is often cheaper to
take out a subscription (= make a yearly payment) to a magazine and
to have it sent by mail.
Many
people do not buy magazines but read back copies (= old issues) put
out in their doctor's or dentist's waiting room or at the
hairdresser's. Libraries have a periodicals section containing
newspapers and a selection of more serious magazines which people can
read in the library.
