LOST IN THE POST

Lucy and her husband Brian Reinold lived in a remote town in the south of England. They were considered to be a happy couple, and really they were, though Lucy was said to have been in love with her cousin Derek before she married Brian. After Lucy’s marriage Derek went to London to join their uncle Tom.

A few months after Brian had lost his job he came home and found Lucy in the company of her cousin. They appeared to be discussing something important. Brian was not happy to see them together. He had always hated Derek, though there was no reason for it.

Twice in the past year the Rainolds had got letters from London addressed to Lucy, and each time Brian didn’t show them to her. He tore the letters to pieces and threw them into the fire. He didn’t want his wife to be disturbed by Derek’s letters, so he explained it to himself at the time.

«You are not supposed to be here», said Brian angrily.

«You see, I am here because I have some business to discuss with your wife. Our Uncle Tom is dead, and he left Lucy 5000 pounds.»

«But that is wonderful!» Brian exclaimed. «How kind of Uncle Tom to have thought of us.»

«Well, you see,» Derek said, addressing Brian, «when Uncle Tom got paralyzed he began to get funny. He was very angry with Lucy that she had never answered the two letters I had written to her for him. He said he expected his letters to be answered and changed his will. He turned out to leave her money to hospitals. It’s strange about those two letters. Do you happen to know why Lucy never wrote any letters? I‘ve often wondered what happened to them.»

Brian went pale, his face was as white as paper. Lucy faced Derek: «They were sure to be lost in the post», she said and took her husband’s ice-cold hand. At that moment Brian realized that she knew everything.
