The main principles of multimedia

The term “multimedia” refers to the integration of existing technologies of audio, video, animation and telecommunication with computing. Multimedia applications are also known as hypermedia.

The power of multimedia resides in hypertext. If you click on a hypertext word, you jump to another screen with more information about that subject.

Hypermedia is similar, but also works with sound, graphics and video.

Multimedia is not a new phenomenon, although it is new to business computing. We live in multimedia world. At home, we experience a variety of media through our television: full-motion video, still images, graphics sound and animation. At the university, we learn through systematic exposure to different media: the teacher’s words, text, audio tapes, graphics, and a variety of visuals and video.

Computers, however, have tend to be uni-medium. Traditionally, computers were text-based, and it’s continuous to be the primary format for business information.

Multimedia software is usually interactive and comes on CDs or DVDs. Multimedia applications are used in all sorts of fields. For example, museums, banks, estate agents have information bases that use multimedia. Some companies produce training programs on optical disks, and marketing managers use presentation packages to make business presentations. Teachers use multimedia programs to make video projects or to teach subjects such as music and languages. They believe that moving images, sound and music involve viewers emotionally as well as inform them and make their message more memorable.

Hypertext – text that contains links to other documents. The codes used to create hypertext documents are called HTML.
