Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart are funny, smart liberals. (My impression is that they are to the left of the Obama administration's record, as Stewart's interview with Obama suggests.) I assume that the people who go to their "rallies" on Saturday will have a lot of fun.

But they may also set back the causes most of them support. Timothy Noah, another liberal, exaggerates a little when he writes of Tea Partiers and anti-Obama independents that the "spectacle of affluent 18-to-34-year-olds blanketing the Mall to snicker at jokes about wingnut ignoramuses and Bible thumpers will, I fear, have the effect of a red cape waved before a bull." But they--hosts and guests alike--may come across as being condescending and sneeringly hostile to non-liberals and overly impressed with their own wonderfulness.

It probably won't have much of an effect on the elections. But to the extent it has an effect, my bet is that it will be to help conservatives and hurt liberals. That won't damage the reputations or careers of Stewart or Colbert. But while they are liberals, their interest in managing their brands does not always align with liberalism's interest in getting Democrats elected.

They will have plenty of time to lampoon a Republican Congress. I'm glad they're doing their small part to bring one about.

So what do you think? Is my description of the political attitude of these shows correct? Will the rallies have the effect Noah and I believe they will?
