The Possessive Case
Существительные в английском языке имеют два падежа: общий и притяжательный. В общем падеже (the Common Case) у существительных нет специального окончания, данная форма дается в словаре. Существительные могут употребляться в функции подлежащего, дополнения, определения, обстоятельства.
Существительные в притяжательном падеже (the Possessive Case) обозначают принадлежность предмета и отвечают на вопрос whose? чей? чья? чье? чьи? Существительные в притяжательном падеже употребляется в функции определения. Как правило, в форме притяжательного падежа употребляются имена существительные, обозначающие одушевленные предметы: Lynne's web site.
The Possessive Case образуется путём прибавления суффикса -'s к существительным в единственном числе, а также к тем существительным во множественном числе, которые образуют его не по правилам, например: boy's, girl's, men's, children's, Апостроф ( ' ) прибавляется к существительным во множественном числе: soldiers', workers'.

Произнесение окончания притяжательного падежа –‘s: после глухих согласных – [s], после звонких согласных и гласных – [z], после шипящих и свистящих – [iz].
Неодушевленные существительные выражают отношение принадлежности с помощью предлога of: the cover of the book – обложка книги.
ИСКЛЮЧЕНИЕ! В форме притяжательного падежа употребляются неодушевленные существительные, используемые как одушевленные, например: nature's laws – законы природы; существительные, обозначающие время, место, вес, расстояние: in a year's time – через год, a pound's weight – весом в фунт, at the baker’s – (в) булочной, today’s newspaper – сегодняшняя газета, a mile’s distance – дистанция в милю; используемые с названиями стран, городов и т.д.: Canada’s population – население Канады, the Sun’s rays – солнечные лучи, the Thames’s cool waters – холодные воды Темзы, в застывших фразеологических сочетаниях: for conscience' sake – для успокоения совести.
Иногда существительное в притяжательном падеже может употребляться без определяемого слова, например, чтобы избежать повтора: My room is bigger than Peter’s. (= than Peter’s room).
