The Present Continuous
Називає:
Дії, що відбуваються зараз, у момент мовлення. Напр. He is reading a book right now.
Тимчасові дії, що відбуваються навколо моменту мовлення, але не безпосередньо у момент мовлення. Напр.. She is preparing for an exam these days.
Дії, що відбуваються занадто часто, і з приводу яких ми хочемо висловити наше роздратування або критику. (У таких реченнях вживається слово “always”). Напр.. You are always interrupting me!
Дії, про виконання яких є домовленість у найближчому майбутньому. Напр.. He is flying to London in an hour.
Вирази часу:
Now, at the moment, these days, at present, always, tonight, still, та ін.
Примітка:
Деякі дієслова не вживаються в часах continuous. Серед них:
Дієслова, що називають сприйняття органами чуттів: see, hear, feel, taste, smell. Напр.. This cake tastes delicious.
Дієслова, що називають розумову діяльність: know, remember, forget, understand, notice, realise, think, believe, recognise, seem, sound, та ін. Напр.. I don’t remember this rule.
Дієслова, що висловлюють вподобання: love, like, dislike, hate, enjoy, prefer, та ін. Напр. Kate likes maths.
Інші дієслова: include, matter, need, belong, cost, mean, own, appear, want, have (=posses), та ін. Напр. This equipment costs a lot of money.
The Past Continuous
Називає:
Дію, що була в процесі розвитку у зазначений момент у минулому. Ми не знаємо, коли ця дія почалась чи завершилась. Напр.. At three o’clock yesterday afternoon Mike was working on the computer.
Дію, що була в процесі розвитку, коли інша дія перебила її. Ми вживаємо Past Continuous для позначення дії, що була в процесі розвитку (довшої дії) і Past Simple для позначення дії, що перебила її (коротшої дії). Напр.. As the generator was turning, the turbine broke down. (was turning = довша дія; broke down = коротша дія)
Дві або більше дій, які відбувались одночасно у минулому. Напр.. While the wind was blowing the wind turbines were working.
Дії у зачині (вступній частині) оповідання або розповіді. Напр.. The sun was shining and the birds were singing. Tom was driving his old truck through the forest.

Називає:
Дію, що перебуватиме в процесі розвитку у зазначений момент у майбутньому. Напр.. This time next week I’ll be flying on a business trip to Japan.
Дію, яка обов’язково відбудеться як результат розпорядку або домовленості. Напр.. I will be seeing them at the meeting tomorrow.

Вживання
Часи Perfect підкреслюють завершеність дії. А саме: Present Perfect називає дію, що завершилась перед моментом мовлення; Past Perfect називає дію, що завершилась перед моментом або іншою дією у минулому; Future Perfect називає дію, що завершиться перед моментом або іншою дією у майбутньому.
He has already done his homework.
He had finished his homework by nine o’clock yesterday.
He will have finished his essay by nine o’clock tomorrow.
He promised he would have finished his essay by nine o’clock.
