  1. Computers in the modern world.

Computers play a very important part in our life. They help people in their work and studies. They save us a lot of time. While at school I often made use of the Internet to collect information for my test papers and compositions.

Computers give access to a lot of information. It is possible to find data and descriptions, chapters from necessary books… to make a long story short, everything you need.

Computers have been around for about fifty years or so. ENIAC, the first great electronic computer, was built in the 1940th; it was the size of a large house, was limited in power and was unreliable. But computers developed quickly. Today computers sit comfortably on our desks and have much more power than those original machines. In the last ten years or so, most large businesses have become completely dependent on computers for storing and looking at information, for writing and for calculating financial and mathematical information.

Computers within a single office or building may be connected, and they therefore form a network. Users of computers on a network can send messages to each other, utilizing the same collections of data or information. In many offices and organizations computer messages have replaced messages written on paper, and they are now called e-mail or electronic mail. E-mail is not only fast and easy (if you understand how to use the computer), but it also saves paper and the work of moving paper from one place to another. Workers can send and receive e-mail without leaving their desks and their desktop computers.

? Disadvantages?

There are some disadvantages, of course. Computer can get viruses. Sometimes the wrong people can make use of the information available in the wrong way. Computers become out-of-date very quickly, they need to be replaced.

  1. English means much in my life. I think that it means much not only for me. Many people in our country are interested in Eglish. They learn and love it and they think the saim way as I do. Not long ago computers and internet have appeared. When a man works in the internet he gets much information in English. When you want to set the definite program you meet with many sets in English. If you don`t know English you can`t understand the material. English enters to our everyday life. On the doors of the shops in our small town we can see the signs "Open" and "Closed". Whenwe buy TV-sets and telephones we can get instruction and names written in English. I think that English in our life means much. Certain people, who study English hope to become English men, go abroad, get rich and maybe see famous actors. Is that really wonderful? Maybe with the help of English they can fulfill their dream. To my mind studying English is very interesting and funny. English means much for me.

9. Ecological Problems of Today

You take part in an International Conference. Make a report about the ecological problems in Ukraine and all around the world.

Since ancient times Nature has served Man, being the source of his life. For thousands of years people lived in harmony with environment and it seemed to them that natural riches were unlimited. But with the development of civilization man’s interference in nature began to increase.

Large cities with thousands of smoky industrial enterprises appear all over the world today. The by-products of their activity pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we grow grain and vegetables on.

Every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons of dust and other harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Vast forests are cut and burn in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of rivers and lakes dry up.

The pollution of air and the world’s ocean, destruction of the ozone layer is the result of man’s careless interaction with nature, a sign of the ecological crises.

The most horrible ecological disaster befell Ukraine and its people after the Chernobyl tragedy in April 1986. About 18 percent of the territory of Byelarus were also polluted with radioactive substances. A great damage has been done to the agriculture, forests and people’s health. The consequences of this explosion at the atomic power-station are tragic for the Ukrainian, Byelarussian and other nations.

Nowaday Ukraine has more difficult then many years before problems – our country is participant of military conflict. A big industrial region Donbass is occupied. A big part of industrial objects also big chemical and chemical emissions stores were crashed.

But forgetting about the war Ukraine have much bigger ecological problems.

For example in the west of Ukraine in Carpathian mountains every year grows up a process of illegal cutting down the trees. The local people already feel the result as a spring floods, which vary often take people lives.

Also a great ecological problem is amber mining in North part of Ukraine/

Environmental protection is of a universal concern. That is v/hy serious measures to create a system of ecological security should be taken.

Some progress has been already made in this direction. As many as 159 countries – members of the UNO – have set up environmental protection agencies. Numerous conferences have been held by these agencies to discuss problems facing ecologically poor regions including the Aral Sea, the South Urals, Kuzbass, Donbass, Semipalatinsk and Chernobyl. An international environmental research centre has been set up on Lake Baikal. The international organization Greenpeace is also doing much to preserve the environment.

But these are only the initial steps and they must be carried onward to protect nature, to save life on the planet not only for the sake of the present but also for the future generations.
