My future profession – philologist

I am a one-year student of the Philology faculty at the BSU. I have chosen Philology as my future profession. Our faculty is divided into a number of departments. Education is provided in 12 specialities.

In the future I will graduate from the U. and become a teacher of the Slovak language and literature and translator. The profession of a teacher has always been one of the most honourable and one of great responsibility.

What makes a good teacher?

• True interest in children and love for them

• He must to be well-educated man with a broad outlook and deep knowledge of the subjects.

• The qualities of sympathy, kindness and an inquiring mind.

• He must to be just, strict and hard-working person.

• They don’t only teach their subject but they also develop their pupils intellect, form their views and characters, their attitude to life and others. They prepare them for real life.

Teachers should teach pupils to enjoy reading books, to encourage them in learning national literature and language. Reading books will help students in their self-education, in better understanding life and in solving problems.

After two years of studying general subjects specialization begins. Our faculty provides all necessary condition for developing the students creative activity.

Many students of our department are engaged in scientific work. At the end of the fourth year the u. undergraduates are sent for a few months to schools to get some practical know-how in teaching. It is known that teaching is a very stressful job taking much time and efforts.

The profession of a philologist is quite diversified and the graduates can work not only at secondary schools but also at the higher educational establishment, publishing houses, radio and TV. They may continue their studies at the postgraduate courses if they have a desire to become scientists.
