MY SPECIALITY

Four hundred years ago the term “physicist” didn’t exist; physics was a part of science-natural philosophy. But the growth of scientific knowledge has been so great that natural philosophy has divided into numerous different disciplines: physics, chemistry, biology and many others.

Physics is that branch of science still most directly concerned with studying 'natural' events and with the fundamental laws of nature. It formulates the basic concepts in all physical phenomena of matter and energy. It divides itself into two branches: experimental and theoretical physics. Experimental physics makes observations, devises and carries out experiments on the basis of which theoretical physics formulates its laws and predicts the behaviour of natural phenomena. So you see that physics is whatever physicists are doing.

Our physics faculty offers programs of study leading to the Diploma of Higher Education, Master Degree, PhD Degree. There are four qualifications: a researcher, an engineer, a manager, a lecturer of physics and informatics.

Students can specialize in Theoretical physics; Solid-State Physics; Biophysics; Physical Optics; Laser Physics and Spectroscopy; Physics of Semiconductors and Isolators; Energy Physics; Thermal Physics; Nuclear Physics and Electronics; Atomic Physics and Physical Informatics; Physics of Protecting Covers; Microelectronics; Physical Metrology and Experiment Automation; Computer Simulation of Physical Processes; Innovative Materials and Technologies; Vacuum Technologies; Physical Experiment in Secondary and Higher School; Applied Spectroscopy; Physics of Non-destructive Control.

Our group of research physicists had 3 specializations provided: Laser Physics and Spectroscopy, Theoretical physics and Biophysics. As for me, Laser Physics and Spectroscopy seems more interesting than biophysics not so boring as Theoretical physics, so I’ve chosen this department. It mostly deals with different fields of optics: wave optics, nonlinear optics, molecular and atomic spectroscopy, lasers and optoelectronics and so on. I don’t know yet the topic of my future research, but for now the most preferable direction is lasers or maybe nonlinear optics.

Graduates from all basic and special courses can work everywhere, including academic physics, industry, teaching and scientific computing. In addition employers in nonscientific fields recognize the value of training in physics and our graduates work in finance, management and commercial computing. What I can actually say about my future work is that it would not be concerned with teaching. I’d better prefer job including scientific research or somehow else concerned with physics, so that I could directly apply my skills.
