Queen Mary: a home from home

We are the only university in central London to offer a completely self-contained residential campus, with a 2,000-bed award-winning Student Village at Mile End. Living on campus is fun, safe and convenient – you’ll only be a five-minute walk to your lectures – great for those 9am starts.

Our accommodation

All of our accommodation is in self-catered houses, flats and maisonettes. You also have access to rooms in the fully catered University of London Halls in central London.

See what it’s like: For virtual tours of our rooms and full details of the accommodation options, visit www.residences.qmul.ac.uk

Living off campus

Renting private accommodation off-campus is a popular choice for many students. The vast majority of secondand third-year students and even some first-years prefer the independent lifestyle offered by sharing flats or houses with friends.

We provide a range of advice and information to help you to find a convenient and affordable place to stay, including an online listing of privately owned accommodation available for rent. Much of this accommodation is in east or northeast London, within easy walking or commuting distance of Mile End.

Applying for our accommodation

We will send you full details on how to apply for a place in our housing once you have firmly accepted an offer to study here*.

Single sex housing

We offer some single sex flats in residences that share bathroom facilities.

Rent scales and information

The prices quoted relate to the academic year 2012-13 and are reviewed each year. Rent is payable each term in advance.

Student Village and Halls

Rents for single rooms range from £113-£151 per week, including gas and electricity costs.

Rooms are available to first year medical and dental students at Dawson Hall, situated at the Charterhouse Square campus, very close to St Bartholomew’s teaching hospital, and at Floyer House which is situated on the Whitechapel campus. Rents at both residences

range from £117-£131 per week, including gas and electricity costs.

University of London Halls

About 125 Queen Mary students live in the University of London’s (UoL) Halls in central London, about 15 minutes away, alongside students of other UoL colleges. Fees for single rooms cost from £180 per week, including breakfast, evening meals and gas and electricity bills.

Privately rented accommodation

Rents typically range from £100-150 per week.

Family accommodation

If you have a family, we strongly advise you not to bring your partner and children to live in London until you have secured suitable housing. We have a limited amount of accommodation for families, but can provide you with advice on how to find alternative accommodation.

For all accommodation queries, contact us on:

Tel: +44 (0)20 7882 5522 email: residences@qmul.ac.uk www.residences.qmul.ac.uk

Those who live furthest away are more likely to be offered accommodation on campus.

‘‘My favourite place to be on campus would have to be sitting by the canal. There’s a cool park on the other side, and it feels like a little urban retreat to watch the swans swim by while studying, having a coffee, or just catching up with a friend.

12 Your Students’ Union

www.qmul.ac.uk/film

Your Students’ Union

The Students’ Union is here to represent and support you in your academic and welfare needs, encourage your personal development and help you enjoy your time at university. We will lobby and fight to secure the exceptional educational standards that you deserve, and ensure that your student experience is the best it can be.

As a Queen Mary student, you will automatically become a member of Queen Mary, University of London Students’ Union (QMSU). QMSU aims to ensure that your time at university is not just about studying, but also socialising and gaining new experiences outside the lab or lecture hall. The Union also provides academic advice and welfare support. If you are studying medicine or dentistry at Queen Mary you will also become a part of the Barts and The London Students’ Association (BLSA).

QMSU has a presence across the three main campuses: Mile End, Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square. Located centrally on the Mile End campus is the new Students’ Union Hub, which includes a reception and info point, bookable facilities, a large social space, a multi-faith centre and student media suite. At our Whitechapel campus the newly renovated Association Building features a reception and box office, vibrant café-bar, computer suite, social spaces, meeting room and studio.

Representation

QMSU is led by elected students who work to improve all aspects of your time at university. Elected trustees, student councillors, and

course representatives all play a role in forming the direction of the Union and providing valuable feedback

to the university. These elected students will represent your views; you can also run for election yourself.

Activities

QMSU offers many opportunities for you to get involved, make friends and explore your interests. With activities including volunteering, fundraising, campaigns, media, club sports, ‘give it a go’ sports sessions (Get Active), societies, and employment, there is something for everyone.

Events and entertainment

QMSU puts on a range of events each year, from quiz nights and club nights to cultural celebrations and socials.

Bars, shops and cafés

On each of our campuses, QMSU runs social spaces and venues for you to take a break, relax or grab something to eat. At Mile End visit Ground café, The Learning Café, The Village Shop, Infusion, or Drapers Bar and Kitchen. At Whitechapel visit The Griff Inn Bar and Restaurant and Box Office. Charterhouse Square is home to the Shield café.

Sport, health and fitness

Taking part in sport at university is a great way to keep fit, meet people and generally have a good time. Along with clubs and Get Active, QMSU runs two health and fitness centres

– Qmotion at Mile End (see page 8), and Fitness to Practice, a smaller facility at Charterhouse Square.

To find out more about QMSU, visit: www.qmsu.org

Did you know?

We host over 120 student-run societies. Whether you’re interested in a particular culture, faith or political party, or you love film, debating or philosophy, there’s almost certainly something for you. If your interest is not covered, you can always start a society yourself.

QMSU also run over 60 sports clubs, including aikido, basketball, cheerleading, cricket, horse riding, netball,

rock climbing and table tennis.

If you want to make a difference in the local community, there’s a huge range of short and longer-term volunteering projects on offer run by

QMSU, including kids’ activities, helping the elderly and homeless, conservation projects, and sports schemes.

QMSU also supports four independent student-run media outlets: a newspaper (QMessenger), magazine (Cub

magazine), a TV station (QMTV), and a radio station (Quest Radio). Getting involved is

a great way to develop your journalistic skills, to meet new people and to have fun.

Careers and employability

In today’s competitive job market it is not enough to graduate with a good degree. Employers also expect graduates to be able to demonstrate a range of skills and first-hand experience of the workplace. At Queen Mary, we offer lots of opportunities and a range of support to help you develop these essential skills and experience.

Value of a QM degree

Queen Mary graduates are highly prized by employers, and have some of the highest starting salaries of any university in the UK (£23,656 in 2011*). Your standing among graduate recruiters will only be enhanced by our membership of the Russell Group of leading universities.

Why our graduates stand out

We have worked with employers, students and academic staff

to define the skills, values and behaviours that capture the distinctive features of our learning environment and that make

our graduates so sought after.

The attributes include:

the skills to influence, negotiate and lead

curiosity and openness to change

initiative and resilience in meeting challenges

ability to work individually and in collaboration with others

the skills to use technologies to access and interpret information.

You will develop some attributes on your programme of study – through group work, presentation and debate, for example. Others you will develop through work experience or by belonging to student societies and sports teams. Find out more

at www.mindthegap.qmul.ac.uk

Learn a language

In today’s global economy, learning another language can make you highly attractive to employers. Even if you’re not studying a language as part of your degree, you can still develop these skills by signing up for a language course with our Language and Learning Unit. Languages offered include Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. See

www.languageandlearning.qmul.ac.uk

Meet Queen Mary graduates

We also invite former students from your subject area to share their experiences of the workplace with you. These more informal sessions are helpful as you can ask anything you like and get the inside track on particular companies or industries. Former students who came to the campus last year included bankers, civil servants, consultants, doctors, engineers, journalists, lawyers, politicians, scientists and writers.

Did you know?

Queen Mary graduates are consistently among the most well paid in the UK – our graduates had an average salary of £23,656 in 2011.

Last year over 200 employers and training organisations visited the campus and we ran over 70+ employer recruitment and networking events.

Our QM Projects scheme links up students with local charities to work on meaningful projects

– anything from developing a website, to helping with event planning or funding applications.

Our Students’ Union runs its own extensive scheme to place students with local charities, including one-off events and regular volunteering.

Last year we launched QM Temps, an in-house agency to help you find temporary work both on and off campus.

There are over 800 vacancies available to browse on the QM JobOnline vacancy site.

Emily Huns, Head of Careers at Queen Mary

Do graduates still earn more than those without a degree?

Yes, graduates do earn more than non-graduates, although much depends on which sector and role the graduate goes into. Average graduate salaries – in the larger firms that report such figures – were increasing year-on-year for a long time and have stayed remarkably stable during this recession.

What should I do – study a subject I’m likely to enjoy, or one that I think will lead to a job?

Generally, one you enjoy and are good at, since motivation and a good grade are two of the five most important factors in making a graduate employable. The other three are relevant work experience, a real understanding of what a job entails and a well presented and evidence-based application and interview (ask a careers consultant about this). Remember that many graduate jobs are open to students of any discipline. However, if you feel safer doing something you feel will lead to a job rather than the subject you enjoy most, that's ok – as long as you enjoy it enough to do well at it.

Tell us about the Queen Mary Careers Centre team.

We provide a range of services including:

helping you to find work experience and part-time work on- and-off-campus

arranging careers events where you can meet prospective employers and network with past students

guiding you through career options after university

advertising vacancies

training you in CV and application writing and interview techniques

advising on whether postgraduate study will improve employment prospects

providing skills training for student groups such as Students’ Union societies and volunteers.

London – a world in one city

A global capital of commerce and culture to rival New York, Tokyo and Beijing, London is one of the world’s great cities. With nearly 400,000 students studying here, it’s also a fantastic place to be a student. There’s always something going on, with lots of free events. Your student card will also get you reduced entry to a surprising number of places, as well as discounts on clothes and food.

Museums and galleries

London has more art galleries and museums than any other UK city. The major museums, such as The British Museum, The National Gallery, The Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Victoria and Albert Museum all offer free entry.

Theatre

You can often get discounted tickets for West End shows by buying them on the day. The same goes for opera: the English National Opera, for example, offers discounted day tickets. There are also lots of great (and affordable) fringe performances from up and coming stars.

Shopping

From flagship high street shops and department stores, to niche boutiques selling creations from the latest young designers, when it comes to shopping, London has it

all. Close to Queen Mary, Brick Lane has lots of quirky vintage shops, as well as a weekend market. Oxford Street is only 15 minutes away by tube, while Europe’s largest urban shopping centre, Westfield Stratford City, is just one tube stop from Mile End.
