3. Talk about the qualities a woman needed to reach the top in a male dominated profession in the early 50-ies

To start with, I’d like to say that my personal view is that it is never late to begin studying or making a career. Very often people think that if they didn’t manage to do that when they were young and ambitious, it is impossible to do in their late forties or early sixties. But I rather think age doesn’t matter at all in someone is strongly determined to make a career. What really important are the person’s quantities and the time he/she lives in.

In my opinion, the text “My great Aunt” can be a vivid example of how woman named Mary Grieve could be a success in the early fifties. Nobody will deny that nowadays making a career for a woman is much easier than it used to be in Mary Grieve’s time. Nevertheless she managed to become the first female editor of a magazine in Britain.

So, what quantities should have had a woman if she wanted to get on in life in the middle of the last century? Well, I think it was impossible for a quiet and submissive woman to make a good career. A woman had to cope with numerous hardships and problems therefore she must have had a strong and determined character. Obviously, intelligence is a quality without which any woman could never get to the top even if she was very hard-working. In my opinion, she should have taken a lot of care of her appearance to look always elegant and graceful. Apart from that, she must have been also prepared to be different depending on the situation.

Unfortunately, we are used to thinking that if a woman has a successful career, a high salary and a luxurious car she is very happy. But let’s look at the “reverse side of the medal”. It’s well-known that most career-women have to forget about such important things as a home and family. That’s why a woman must take into account all pros and corns before she makes the most important choice in her life.

In conclusion I’d like to say that no matter who you are and in what time you live, you surely need a bit of good luck. It’s not necessary to be born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth, but if a fortune accompanies you, it is always possible to make all your dreams come true.

5. Talk about the daily chores of a British housewife

To begin with, I’d like to mention a proverb saying “Men make houses, women make homes”, and I fully agree with it. It’s a well-known fact that almost all the work about the house is done by women, because men usually appear to be lazy about the household chores, and some of them don’t even raise a finger to help their wives. They think their work is to earn money and from time to time getting things done if smth is broken or out of order, and that is enough.

British housewives as well as other housewives all over the world take main responsibilities for the house, doing mountains of the exhausting work every day. Now let’s have a look at an ordinary day of a British housewife. Her typical day usually starts in the early morning, because by the time the other members of the family get up she must cook breakfast. Then she has to dress the kids and take them to the school or kindergarten. After that she starts doing her daily housework, which includes making the beds, sweeping off the dust, hoovering and washing the floors. Then the housewife hurries to do some shopping, and as she worries about her children’s nutrition, she always spends at least two hours choosing healthy food. As soon as her kids return home she feeds them and then helps them to do the homework, combining it with washing the dishes or ironing. Now it’s time for making dinner, which also takes her a lot of time and strength. So, by the time her husband returns home she has completely exhausted and tired. But it isn’t the end of the day. While her darling lies on the sofa watching his favorite football match the woman has to put the naughty children to bed, and then wash a mountain of dirty pans, plates and cups. In addition, she has to listen to her husband’s complaints of what a difficult working day he had. I think, it’s natural that after such a tiresome, monotonous day any housewife suddenly has a thought that she hates her life.

As for me, I don’t want to have such life in my future, and I’ll do everything possible to make my life enjoyable and diverse.
