International Journal of Sustainable Engineering
Engineering and sustainable development are intrinsically linked, and truly sustainable solutions are created through sharing ideas and new knowledge.
The International Journal of Sustainable Engineering (IJSE) aims to provide engineers from a variety of backgrounds with access to a valuable source of cross-disciplinary information for promoting sustainable practices. One of the principle objectives of the journal is to stimulate innovation and development of sustainable products and production technologies, as well as novel services and business models. A key consideration is also to encourage the generation of timely, effective regulations and educational programmes to support various corporate and social stakeholders – from engineers to managers, and from policy makers to consumers. As such, IJSE invites original manuscripts in areas including but not limited to:
Methodologies, Modelling and Management
Engineering design for sustainable development Life-cycle engineering
Product versus service paradigms
Sustainable supply chain management
Sustainable business models
Novel organisational structures and systems to support industrial sustainability
Technologies, Processes and Resources
Sustainable technology innovation to support resource efficiency
Sustainable material development and process engineering
Energy conservation and low-carbon manufacturing
Waste minimisation, remanufacturing, reuse and recycling technologies
Sustainable power generation and renewable energy technologies
Legislation, Education and Corporate Social Factors
Environmental management and ISO standards
Producer responsibility and ecologically aware legislations
Promoting sustainable use and consumption models
Engineering solutions for developing countries
Engineering education for sustainable development
Submission and Reviewing Process:
In addition to standard manuscript formats, we also accept submissions in the form of ‘Short Communications’ and ‘Book Reviews’. Short Communications provide an opportunity for prompt ‘fast-track’ publication of brief manuscripts that do not exceed 2000 words and 4 illustrations. Book Reviews will be 500-600 words in length and cover emerging texts relevant to practitioners and researchers within sustainable development.
All submitted manuscripts are subject to initial appraisal by the Editors, and, if found suitable for further consideration, to peer review by independent, anonymous expert referees. All peer review is single blind and submission is online via ScholarOne Manuscripts.
Intelligent Buildings International
Intelligent buildings are ones in which the building fabric, space, services and information systems can respond in an effective manner to the demands of the owner, the occupier and the environment.
Intelligent buildings are essentially about people, processes and systems. The interdisciplinary nature of the design and management processes of the buildings are important, together with emerging methodologies and innovations such as smart materials, embedded systems and robotics. Evaluation tools are applied in an integrated and holistic manner.
Intelligent Buildings International examines developments in the design, construction and operating processes for intelligent buildings, and explores the wider context, including practical solutions which take into account sociological and economic considerations. Lessons from nature and vernacular architecture also feature in the journal.
The principal areas covered include:
understanding how the built environment affects people’s well-being
sustainable design and management
automation and innovative systems
approaches to design.
Going beyond traditional engineering and architectural solutions, and in an effort to overcome fragmentation at educational and professional levels, peer-reviewed research is complemented by contributions from industry specialists that critically evaluate technological developments. Topics covered by Intelligent Buildings International include: • Integration of design, management and operation processes • Assessment of rating methods • Smart materials for intelligent facades • Healthy indoor environments • Whole life performance and value • Regulations and standards • Biomimetic architecture • The impact of intelligent buildings on people and organizations • Development of IT and communication systems • Technological forecasting, social change and innovation • Application of control and sensor technologies
Intelligent Buildings International publishes peer-reviewed papers including: • Original research papers • State-of-the-art reviews and analyses • Case studies • Opinion pieces
The journal also publishes relevant commentary and review pieces including: • Visionary perspectives and commentaries • Technical notes • Book reviews
The editor welcomes manuscripts relating to the scope of journal and will be pleased to comment and advise on proposals. For more information email the editor at d.j.clements-croome@reading.ac.uk .
All articles submitted are subject to initial appraisal by the Editor, and if found suitable for further consideration, enter peer review by independent, anonymous, expert referees. The Journal operates double-blind peer review and all submissions are to be made online using the ScholarOne site
