The museum named after V.K. Arseniev is the main keeper of the past of Vladivostok. Its archives grant you an opportunity to see the city at the beginning of the exploration of the Far East, retrace all stages of its development, keep in mind its modern image Opened in 1890, the first museum of Vladivostok was located on Peter the Great Street. A curious detail connected with its premises is that they were erected by two architects. First, an unremarkable one-story outhouse was built and later, in 1909, a splendid two-story mansion designed in modernistic style by the famous architect F.F. Postnikov was added.

As time passed, the museum’s stock kept growing, and the more it grew, the larger the number of unique exhibits became, reflecting the past of the city and the region. In 1980 the Arseniev museum moved to new premises downtown.

During more than one hundred years of its existence, the oldest museum has gathered a variety of rich collections. Besides, the museum keeps the archeological and ethnographical collections composed personally by Arseniev. Since its opening, more than six million people have visited the museum.

a) This district originates its name from that of a small river flowing down from the hills to the Amursky Gulf. Now it is difficult to believe that, some time in the past, the district bore the name of Katorshnaya Sloboda (“Convicts Settlement”). In 1902, under the pressure of citizens living there, the former offensive name was changed to the present one.

Today the district is a large and modern industrial area of the city, including the railway depot, the oil terminal, construction factories, and the biggest bread-baking and dairy enterprises in Primorye. The Pacific Naval Academy named after Admiral S.O. Makarov is located here too.

4. The district is the biggest in the city. Extensive civil construction was being carried out here since the early 60 s.This part of the city bears the stamp of the All-Russia event, the 150^th anniversary of the battle of Borodino. To commemorate this many streets in the district were named in honour of heroes of the Patriotic war of 1812 such as Bagration, Davydov, Koutuzov.
