The largest cities of the usa

There are very many cities in the USA. One of the largest cities in the world is New York. It is situated at the mouth, of the Hudson River. New York was founded by the Dutch. It's interesting to know that Manhattan Island - the central part of New York was bought from the local Indians for 24 dollars by the Dutch. In the eighteenth century New York grew into the largest city of the United States of America. New York is a great seaport now, the leading textile and the financial centre of the country. Manhattan Island with the Wall Street district is the heart of America's business and culture. New York is the city of sky-scrapers. The highest of them is the 102-storeyed Empire State Building. There are many other places of interest in New York: Central park, Times Square, Rockefeller Centre, the shopping districts and the United Nations Building. In Manhattan at Broadway there is Columbia University, one of the biggest universities of the USA.

Another large city of the USA is Boston, one of the first cities which were built on the Atlantic coast of America. It is an important port and a financial and cultural centre. It has three universities.

Chicago is one of the biggest industrial cities in the USA and the second largest after New York.

Philadelphia, near the east coast, produces agricultural machines and locomotives. Light industry is highly developed here. Philadelphia is an important cultural centre with many fine buildings and a university.

Los Angeles, in California, is the centre, of modem, industries. Not far from Los Angeles is Hollywood, the centre of the US film business.

The United States is a federal union which is made up of fifty states and one independent district - the District of Columbia. It is a piece of land which does not belong to any state, but to all the states. The District of Columbia is the territory of the national capital of the USA, "Washington, with its own laws and

Regulations. The words 'Washington' and 'the Columbia District1 mean practically the same, thing. Washington, D.C. is situated on both banks of the Potomac River, between two states, Maryland and Virginia. This place was chosen by the first American President George Washington. The plot of land of a hundred square miles was bought from private owners by the state. In 1790 G. Washington personally laid the cornerstone of the Capitol where the Congress sits. The place was called the District of Columbia in honors of Columbus, the discoverer of America. The capital got the name of Washington after the name of its founder.

At the beginning of the 19th century the new capital was called 'City of Streets without Houses'. Now Washington is sometimes called the heart of America. It is the place where the federal government works and where each President of the United States lives. Washington is smaller in size than the largest cities of the USA, such as New York, Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles. The buildings in Washington are not very tall because no building must be taller than the Capitol. But in political sense Washington is the centre of the country and the most important city of the United States. . .

Besides, there are a lot of places for tourists to see in Washington. One of them is the Washington Monument which is 555 feet tall (160 m); it is called “Pencil” because of its shape. There is an elevator there, which carries visitors to its 500-foot level observation windows.

The White House where the President lives also attracts tourists. Some of its rooms and grounds are open for the public.

Other monuments of great interest are the Thomas. Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial.

Arlington National Cemetery is known for the grave of John F. Kennedy and for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Washington is not so old as Rome, Moscow or London, but the Americans have every reason to be proud of their beautiful capital.
