Units of Measurement.

Mass, length, tine, area, velocity, acceleration. - all of these are physical quantities. Whenever we measure one of these we are finding its magnitude. To find the magnitude of a physical quantity we must measure it. The magnitude of any physical quantity is expressed as number times a unit of measure.

Time is a physical concept and its definition is related to certain laws of physics. The laws of physics say that the average time it takes for the sun to move from its noon position on one day to its noon position the next day must be constant and is called the the mean solar day. The laws of physics Say also that the period of oscillation of a vibrating slab of crystal in a crystal oscillator should remain constant if the temperature and other external conditions are kept constant. So an electronic crystal oscillator can be Bade into a very accurate clock. The same is true of the vibrational frequency of atoms in a molecule. In fact atomic clock counting up these vibrations are the most accurate of all.

Accounting shows a financial picture of the firm. An accounting department records and measures the activity of a business. It reports on the effects of the trans­actions on the firms financial condition. Accounting records give a very important data. It is used by management, stockholders. creditors, independent analysts, banks and government.

Host businesses prepare regularly the two types of records. That is the income statement and balance sheet. These statements show how mоney was received and spent by the company.

One major tool for the analysis of accounting records is ratio analisys.fi ratio analysis is the relationship of two figures. In finance we operate with three main categories of ratios. One ratio deals with profitability, for example ,the Return on Investment Ratio. It is used as a measure of a firms operating efficiency.

The second set of ratios deals with assets and liabi­lities. It helps a company to evaluate its current financial position. The third set of ratios deals with the overall financial structure of the company. It ana­lyses the value of the ownership of the fin.
