A RESUME.

A resume is often called a CV (curriculum vitae). It must contain a summary of essential facts about your background:

1. personal details

2. career objective

3. education

4. work experience

5. references

Now let us speak about it in detail.

In your resume you should highlight information, which indicates your suitability to the job. If you have had previous experience in various phases of employment, it may be useful to have two or three different resumes, each emphasizing a different area of competence.

Begin the resume with personal data: your name, address, home phone number and business phone number (recommended only if your present employer is aware of your job search). You may also include your date of birth, marital status, and number of dependents. Then, if you like, you can give a brief explanation of your career objective or goals.

If you are a recent graduate with limited business experience, begin the next portion of the resume with your education. Highlight achievements and honours, and note extracurricular activities. Mention any courses you took which are relevant to the position you want, or specialized training you may have participated in. Do not forget your part-time or summer employment, and indicate responsibility and achievements.

If you possess a solid work experience, you should begin with it. This includes your job title, the name of employer, address, date of employment, and a brief summary of duties. Emphasize responsibilities and highlight personal achievements, advancement and recognition. Your list of positions should be in reverse chronological order, so begin with your current employer.

Next, your resume can provide information about your leisure and non-work activities. You might include:

clubs or professional associations

community volunteer work

sports and hobbies

Be brief but do not forget something that might be interesting or unusual, might attract attention to your person. Keep in mind that you are not the only one applicant for the position and you have to compete with other people.

Finally, you can list references though it has become acceptable practice to write "References: Available upon request" because addresses, titles, phone numbers can change. Choose references carefully and always get permission to use their names as references.

Make sure that there are NO spelling mistakes in your resume! And most certainly you should type it.

8. Retell the text.

9. Agree or disagree with the statements:

1. A curriculum vitae is a career resume showing education and previous work experience.

2. One should not mention his or her career goal in the resume in order not to seem too ambitious.

3. One should have one and the same resume for different potential employers, but they must be perfect.

4. Sometimes it is possible to send a handwritten resume.

5. The information about the applicant's education must always precede the information about work experience.

6. One's summer employment is irrelevant.

7. Some unusual hobbies should be mentioned.

8. Listing references in one's resume is a must.
