4. In the table given below there are questions which help you to ask for directions. Possible answers may help you to describe the way.

Where is a port? How do (can) I get to the bus station? How do (can) I get from the post office to the bank? Can you tell me the way to the Town Hall? Which way to the swimming pool? Is it far from here? How long does it take me to get there? Must I take a bus?

Go straight on Lenin street. Go straight for two blocks. Go straight up to the traffic lights (until Kirov street.) Go two blocks. Go past the cinema (pass (by) the cinema). Turn south (north, west east). Turn right (left) on Pushkin street. Take a bus. Get out in three bus stops Get out at (the next bus stop, at Kirov street.) Go as far as the traffic lights and … Cross the street at the traffic lights.

You can’t miss it. It’s on the corner. It’s in front of you. It’s on the opposite side. It’s on the left (right). It’s at the end of the street. It’s next to the post office. It takes you 10 min to walk there. It’s a 10-minutes’ walk from here. It’ quite a distance. You’d better take a bus.

1. Listen to the CD and repeat the phrases which help you to ask for directions.

2. Your ship visits Mariposa. You ask for directions. Read the travel agent’s answers. Where do you want to go? Complete the dialogues and act them with your study partner.

Example: You – Excuse me, how do I get from the school to the beach?

Travel Agent – OK. Start at the school. Turn east. Go straight on Daffodil Lane. Turn right on Main street. Go south until Boardwalk Avenue. It’s in front of you.

You – Is it far?

Travel Agent – Not very far. It takes you 10 minutes to get there.

5. Pair work. Make up a short conversation with your study partner about your friend’s first visit of your town using the following sentences:

• I’d like to buy some souvenirs to take home. Can you tell me a good place to shop?
