4. Read the text. Shipboard training

Dear Alex,

I’m happy to hear you are going to visit that nice place again where we spent such a wonderful time last summer. Thank you for the invitation but unfortunately I won’t be able to join you. The matter is, after finishing the second year of study we are going to have shipboard training and will spend about three months at sea. I’m very excited because we are going to do shipboard training on board the famous sailing ship Sedov.

During the shipboard training we will learn how to climb up the masts and set and furl sails. I must admit, it’s very dangerous because the height of the masts is more than 60m. Safety is very important when you are at sea that’s why we will learn how to use life-saving equipment (life-jackets, life buoys, immersion suits), to lower (launch) and hoist the rescue boats. While we are working aloft or in stormy weather we must use the safety harnesses.

It is common practice on board that all cadets keep watch everywhere on the ship: at the wheel, as a lookout on the bow, in the galley and cadets` messroom. We will be on watch every three days. As to scrubbing the deck, polishing the brasswork, painting, all cadets will do this routine work every day.

Sailing on the Sedov we’ll also learn something about our future profession. Skilled officers will instruct cadets of navigational faculty how to use satellite navigation systems and to handle other navigational instruments. The apprentices will take bearings of some light-vessels, lighthouses, different coastal objects and determine the ship’s position on charts.

Future radio engineers will work in the radio-room transmitting and receiving different messages, weather reports and navigational warnings. They will learn how to tune and repair the damaged radio equipment.

We, cadets of marine engineering faculty, will keep watch in the engine room. The Sedov was the 1st sailing ship equipped with the engine. The engine isn’t powerful but it still requires proper maintenance. The marine engineers will teach our boys how to maintain the main engine, auxiliary machinery, how to lubricate and repair the equipment of the machinery space. At the end of shipboard training we will qualify as motormen.

Moreover during the shipboard training on the Sedov we will visit many foreign ports and will have a chance to make new friends and to communicate with foreign people, and everyone is able to get professional skills during the shipboard training.

That’s why I’m looking forward to the end of the semester and to having my first voyage. I believe it will be unforgettable.

See you soon,

Pavel
