Text B. “An Engineer’s Duties” or “Building an Engineering Career”

In this era of rapid technological, industrial, and economic change, it is challenging to build a technical career, and to perform moral duties. Young engineers entering the workplace today can be assured that many of their skills will soon become obsolete. Here are some recommendations about how students can give themselves a competitive edge.

1. Develop generic problem-solving skills. Here the problems are meant, which defy easy quantification and involve ambiguous situations that require judgment as to what the problem really is. Generic problem-solving skills are the most obvious manifestation of an intuitive process and God-given engineering talent. But on the other hand, everyone has some degree of talent and even gifted people have to develop their gifts. You should develop those abilities by struggling with problems by yourself, ideally starting in early childhood.

2. Study successful people. Watch them carefully to see what you can learn. They tend to have an intense personal interest, a personal

relationship with their technology. They usually have a passion for their work.

3. Examine yourself carefully and honestly. Try to understand your limitations. Strengthen your specific weaknesses.

4. Acquire an interdisciplinary technical education. Companies need engineers who can grasp the nature of inter-branch (межотраслевых) disciplines.

5. Prepare for the non-technical aspects of your technical career. Narrow technical skills may get you in the door, but what moves you up in the ladder will be the things like the ability to communicate, to cooperate with people.

6. Develop practical hands-on skills. Practice relevant summer work experience. This experience can be a distinct advantage over other students and assure a minimum level of engineering competence.

The Main Duties

1. Engineer must have a good understanding of documents (standards, specifications).

2. Engineer must know how to draw the parts of mechanisms.

3. Engineers must study the structure of materials and its properties.

4. Engineer should be able to remove machine and equipment breaking downs.

Engineer must use other countries’ experience.

5. Engineer must follow safety rules.

The Related Tasks

a) Engineer should learn to work in a team.

b) Engineer is supposed to assist his/her colleagues.

c) Engineer is to guide other specialists and workers.

d) Engineer should develop his/her communication and listening skills.

e) Engineer should be able to explain and find arguments for promoting and advertising innovative methods, materials and issues.

f) Engineer must develop his/her practical and personal abilities by studying foreign languages.
