Home reading method guide №1 (3rd year of study)

A FAREWELL TO ARMS” (BY E.HEMINGWAY)

Chapters 1-4 (pp. 3-16)

Assignment 1 Give synonyms for the following words and illustrate their meanings with examples of your own:

troop (p.3), to motion (p.5), benefit (p.6), to bellow (p.7), to resume (p.10), argument (p.10), nuisance (p.11), obtainable (p.12), relief (p.13), a work (p.15).

Assignment 2 Essential vocabulary. Translate the phrases into Ukrainian and use them in the sentences of your own:

to be six months gone with child (p.4), summer lightning (p.3), to check cholera (p.4), at the end of the fall (p.5), to speak pidgin Italian (p.6), to bait smb. (p.6), to be hit by shell fire (p.7), to share the room with smb. (p.8), to loan smb. (p.9), the impression of a man of sufficient wealth (p.9), to be wet with dew (p.11), a nuisance (p.11), a dressing station (p.11), to shell smb. (p.11), to be on permission (p.11), to depend to a considerable extent on smb (p.12), to blow smb/ smth to bits (p.15), to take smth literally (p.16).

Assignment 3 Reproduce the situations from the text in which the word-combinations from your essential vocabulary occur.

Assignment 4 Write out the names of fingers. Be ready to comment on the phrases with the word “finger”:

  • not lift/raise a finger;

  • to cross your fingers;

  • to put your finger on smth;

  • not lay a finger on smb;

  • to have/keep your finger on the pulse (of smth);

  • to have a finger in every pie/in many pies;

  • to twist/wrap/wind smb around your little finger;

  • the finger of blame/suspicion;

  • to pull/get your finger out;

  • to put two fingers up at smb;

  • to give smb the finger;

  • to be all fingers and thumbs;

  • a fingermark.

Assignment 5 Prepare the perfect reading and literary translation of the extract beginning with p.5 “The forest of oak trees … “up to p.6 “… the captain commenced picking on the priest”. The translation should be done in writing.

Assignment 6 Give the detailed description of:

  1. the town Henry found himself in on coming back;

  2. the room lieutenant Henry shared with Rinaldi.

Assignment 7 Make up 10 questions to cover the plot of the chapters.

Assignment 3 Reproduce the situations from the text in which the word-combinations from your essential vocabulary occur.

Assignment 4 Prepare the perfect reading and literary translation of the extract beginning with p.22 “Oh, I love you so … “up to p.23 “… It was all right with me”. The translation should be done in writing.

Assignment 5 Answer the following questions:

  1. Mind the expression of Lieutenant Henry “I knew I didn’t love Catherine Barkley nor had any idea of loving her. This was a game …” How does this phrase characterize him?

  2. In what way did Catherine Barkley apprehend the relations with Henry (seriously or lightsomely)?

  3. Concentrate your attention on Henry’s concern to the unknown soldier. Was Henry’s help sincere?

Assignment 6 Give summary of the given chapters (8-10 sentences).
