7. Omsk

Omsk region is located in the southern part of the West-Siberian Plain. The climate is continental. The main water artery is the Irtysh River. Many lakes also dot the region

Omsk region has a rich abundance of animal and bird life.

Omsk was founded in 1716. Omsk is one of the oldest towns in Siberia.

Omsk was a last -growing town with flourishing trade.

Another most developed industry in the town, petrochemical, bloomed in the 50s as one ofthe biggest oil-refineries in the world was built followed by a synthetic rubber plant.

The history of Omsk is closely linked with many great Russian names. Talented Russian painter Vrubel was born in Omsk.

Now Omsk is the second largest city in Siberia and a large industrial center of Russia.

Omsk is an important and cultural center as well. People of different confessions

representing different nationalities. The Omskovites are proud of their past and despite all difficulties look with confidence into the future.

§ 8. The russian federation

Russia is one of the largest countries in the world. It occupies of Easter Europe and northern Asia.

The Russian Federation borders upon a great number of countries.

The population of Russia is about 150 million people.

The capital of Russia is Moscow. It is the political, economic center of the I country with the population of about 10 million people.

There is an enormous variety of landforms and landscapes. The Russian Federation is rich in oil, coal, iron, gold, silver and other minerals.

Russia is a Presidential Republic according to the Constitution. The head of the state is the President. The legislative branch is represented by Duma. The Symbol of Russia is a three- colored flag with three horizontal stripes: white, blue and red. The Emblem of Russia is a double-headed eagle.

§ 9. The united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland

The United Kingdom is a very small country. All together they make the image of Britain fascinating and exciting.

The UK occupies the greater part of British Isles from near the French coast to the far north near Ireland.

If to speak about language the official one is English.

The national capital is London, situated on the river Thames.

There are also many big cities in the UK such as Edinburgh, Oxford, Stratford, etc.

In modern times the UK is perhaps best seen as a middle-sized, middle-ranking industrial country. The national government is a parliamentary democracy dominated by the monarchy. All real power lies with Parliament and the existing government. On the world stage the UK is a part of the European Union.

§ 10. International cooperation in medicine

A number of health problems could not be solved by one country alone therefore international cooperation in medicine was necessary. The constitution of World Health Organization was signed by 61 countries. WHO activities take many forms: strengthening national health services, preparing more and better health workers, controlling or epidemic diseases.

In present days the world medicine had made great progress in some fields of the protection of human health.

One of the main services carried out by WHO is the service of epidemic warnings.

The pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia, hepatitis В and AIDS remains serious threats. WHO estimates that 8-10 million adults may currently be infected with HIV.

The control of cardiovascular diseases and cancer is one of the most pressing problems of modern medicine.

All these problems are discussed by the physicians and scientists from different countries at their congresses, conferences and symposia.

The daily work of the WHO is carried out by a medical and administrative staff of a great number of international officers from different countries.
