Choosing a profession

The problem of choosing the future profession has always been very important. The profession a person chooses in many ways determines his future life. This is a universal problem of our epoch. Every generation in this or that way comes across it. For most people choosing a career is not an easy task. It is one of the most important decisions one makes in life. The properly chosen career makes a person happy and successful for the rest of his life.

There are several factors that influence the decision of young people to make their choice. They concern material and spiritual aspects of the future profession. It is generally believed that professions should be both prestigious and interesting. At the same time other factors are important. Much depends on the inclinations and interests of the person. Although it is wonderful when one’s hobby becomes one’s profession it seldom happens in reality. Another important factor is social environment. The profession of the parents often in this or that way influences the future profession of their children.

It is impossible to forget about the material aspect of the future profession. It indicates the level of the society’s values. Today all professions can be classified as prestigious and not prestigious. The problem of prestige is subjective. When the job is prestigious money is of secondary importance. The future profession should be interesting and meet the demands of the person. Today the most popular professions are lawyers and economists. These professions are prestigious.

One of the most fashionable and prestigious profession of today is that of a computer operator. Although computers came into our life only in the 1960s they quickly gained the ground of the contemporary society having become its indispensable part. Today our life is entirely connected with computers. With the help of computers people can do a lot of wonderful things from controlling spaceship up to buying books and participating in virtual conference.

I want to be a doctor. It is an interesting profession. I understand that it is necessary to study a lot to become a doctor. I also understand that this profession requires great responsibility because it deals with the most precious thing that a person has - with his health.

Travelling.

Thousands of people spend their holidays traveling. Traveling is an excellent kind of recreation. Returning from a trip people are refreshed in body and spirit and ready to go to work again. People can travel by means they like best. A trip can be made by boat, strain, plane, car or bus.

As for me I like traveling by air because it is more interesting. It is convenient comfortable and much quicker than any other method. There is no trouble of changing from train to steamer and then to another train. Besides, flying itself is a thrilling thing. Before I get on board the plane I have my luggage registered and I take a small bag with me. I can watch the plane taking off and landing before the flight. When the flight is announced and the passengers are invited to board the plane the stewardess greets them and shows them their seats. When the plane takes off she gives the passengers all the information about the flight. And what is more she offers them lemonade and sweets. During the flight the passengers do whatever they like. Some of them read, others sleep or chat or look out enjoying the beautiful scene.

I think I should like to say a word or two about trains. With a train we have speed, comfort and pleasure combined. From a railway carriage we have splendid view of the whole countryside. If you are hungry you can have a meal in the dining-car and if the journey as a long one, you can have a wonderful bed in a sleeper. A big railway station is a very interesting place. There is the movement and the excitement of people going away or waiting to meet friends. There are the hoots of the porters as they pull luggage along the platforms. You can see many people at the booking office getting tickets. There are crowds of people hurrying to the refreshment rooms.

The big sea ports are also the exciting places. There is no travel as fine as by ship. Some people like to cruise on the Volga, the Dnieper and other rivers and seas. I like to feel the desk under my feet to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea blowing in my face and the harbour and see the steamers, cargo-ships, sailing-ships and rowing boats.

Some people fell seasick especially when the sea is a little bit rough and they prefer walking. Hiking is becoming very popular among the people. People like to spend their days off in the country. They like to walk in the forest or climb the mountains. It is pleasant to spend a day joking and singing with friends on a river-bank, a lakeshore or in a camp. They have a good time and rest. The people enjoy the beauty of the country and they fell the quietness and calm of nature.

Nowadays a lot of people travel in their own cars along the roads. Beautiful pine forest and silvery birches, picturesque rivers and numerous lakes attract lovers of nature. They see ancient monuments and places of cultural and historical interest.

PROBLEMS OF YOUTH.

Youth is the time, when a person is trying to find his place in the world. And during this search he or she comes across different problems which are as important as those of the adults. The youth of the twenty- first century face almost the same problems which were acute to their parents when they were young.

One of them is a generation gap. Every generation is unique in its experience. It has

Its own ideas and a system of values concerning every aspect of human life. Adults

Always complain that the young are not what they were. These worlds are repeated from generation to generation. Undoubtedly it is correct. In fact today the young are better educated. They derive joy from more freedom. At present the young do not

blindly accept the ideas of their parents. For them everything that adults bear in mind

is past history. And this inevitable, because different generations take different directions. The adult always teach the young how to live. They apply old standards to

the new way of life. The young think that the adults have lost touch with everything

that is important in life. The young know what they want. They prefer to make their

own mistakes rather than to listen to the warnings of the adults. The young want to

live their own life. In the 19th century Ivan Turgenev in his novel “Fathers and Sons”

perfectly illustrated the eternal problem of fathers and children’s misunderstanding.

Another problem of the youth is the relationship of the young people with their

friends and beloved. I believe in male friendship, and I doubt that there can be any real female friendship. I think it is impossible to have a lot of friends. A person can be on good terms with his or her classmates or university groupmates but have only one or two real friends. I believe that real friends will never betray each other. They will always understand and help each other.

The problem of love is very important for the young. Today the young fall in love when they reach the age of Romeo and Juliet. Romanticism and idealism very often accompany the love of the young. Their belief in eternal love can end dramati-

cally. For a happy family life two people must understand and respect each other.

It should be said that the young have other problems as well. They are concerned with education, money, employment, hobby, spending their free time, communication, and the like. In general all the problems of the young are linked with the present rather then with the past or future.
