Personal Computers

  1. The first PC was put on the market in 1975.

  2. Today the PC can serve as a workstation for the individual.

  3. The interface between man and machine has become friendly.

  4. So a wide array of computer functions is accessible to people with no technical background.

  5. A PC is based on a microprocessor; it is a microcomputer, or a micro.

  6. But not all micros are PCs.

  7. A micro can be dedicated to a single task.

  8. A PC is a stand-alone computer that puts a wide array of capabilities at the disposal of an individual.

  9. Portable computers are as versatile, reliable and fast as desktops.

  10. Notebooks weigh about 6 pounds and have screens about 15 inches diagonally.

  11. Palmtop computers can fit into your hand.

Modeling

  1. A computer model is a program which consists of a set of equations.

  2. It attempts to simulate an abstract model of a particular system.

  3. The equations describe the behaviour of a process or an object.

  4. When computer solves these equations, a simulation is carried out.

  5. To see how the model behaves we feed values into it.

  6. Computer simulations are useful adjuncts to purely mathematical models.

  7. A mathematical model tries to find an analytical solution to a problem from a set of parameters and initial conditions.

  8. A computer simulation generates a sample of representative scenarios.

  9. It is used for such models in which a complete enumeration of all possible states would be impossible.

  10. The first deployment of computer simulation was to model the process of nuclear detonation during the Manhattan Project in World War II.

  11. Now computer models are rather widespread.

Simulations

  1. A nuclear power plant simulator is an efficient training tool.

  2. Its computer programs give control room operators practice in responding to routine and emergency situations.

  3. Two types of simulators are used in control-room training.

  4. A full-scope simulator includes an instructor station and a full-size physical replica of the control panels of a nuclear power plant.

  5. An analytical simulator uses computer monitor screens instead of replicated control panels.

  6. The computer’s graphic displays represent plant systems.

  7. Operators practice responding to various conditions by entering computer commands.

  8. Each simulator must be designed to replicate the exact configuration and behavior of each particular reactor.

  9. The first full-scope training simulator in Ukraine began operating in December 1997 at Khmelnytskyy NPP.

Presentation Software

  1. Presentations are used to sell products, services or ideas to someone else.

  2. To back up what presenter is saying visual aids are used.

  3. Visual aids are slides, transparency in a projector or rolling slide show.

  4. With multimedia presentations it is possible to see demonstrations on the screen and to interact with the software.

  5. To produce high-quality technical drawings CAD is used.

  6. With the use of CAD modifications can be made at the press of button.

  7. The most popular CAD package is AutoCAD.

  8. It produces accurate scale diagrams.

  9. You can easily manipulate images on the screen, scale them up and down and produce drawings in 3-D.

  10. The images can be stored on disk and retrieved at a later date.
