Language learning focus skimming

As a student of engineering or as professional engineer you have to read a great number of different types of texts. So it is necessary that you develop the most effective skills for getting the information you want quickly and accurately when you read.

One useful strategy is to read a text quickly to get a general idea of the kind of information it contains. You can then decide which parts of the text are worth reading in more detail, depending on your reading purpose. This strategy is called skimming. When you skim a reading passage, you read the most important parts of it quickly, without reading every word. A good strategy when skimming is to read the first sentence of each paragraph. You might also read key words in each paragraph that seem important.

Writing a summary

Sometimes you need to present a long text in a short form and generalize the information given in it. In this case, you are writing a summary of a text or an article.

To summarize an article, you may like to follow these steps:

  1. Read through the whole article again and think of a suitable title for it.

  2. Make sure you understand all the main points. Go through the article and underline the relevant information in each paragraph.

  3. Make notes about the main points:

  • omit repetitions and unnecessary phrases:

  • leave out details

  1. Make sentences from the notes and connect the sentences by using linking words. Write your first draft.

  2. Improve your first draft by reducing sentences.

  3. Check grammar, spelling. Write the final version of your summary.

Writing an annotation

An annotation is a brief summary of a book, article, or other publication. Its purpose is to describe the work in such a way that the reader can decide whether or not to read the work. As appropriate each of these issues might be assessed and commented on in the annotation.

  • Qualifications of the author, unless very well known.

  • The scope, the content and main purpose of the publication (e.g., book, article, web site).

  • The intended audience and level of reading difficulty.

  • The method of obtaining data or doing research.

  • The author’s conclusions.

  • Comparison with other works on the same subject.

  • Materials appended to the work — e.g., maps, charts, photos, etc.

  • The work’s importance or usefulness for the study of a subject.

Not all of these points are necessary for every annotation, and they certainly do not have to be noted in the order listed here, but they at least ought to be kept in mind when writing an annotation.

What characterizes a well-written annotation?

  • Brevity (120-150 words; 2-3 paragraphs maximum.)

  • Conciseness (Make every word count.)

  • Complete sentences of varying lengths, or verb phrases (Be consistent.)

  • Only significant ideas and details included.

  • No direct quotations or paraphrases. Use your own words. Do not cut and paste from a database abstract.
