XI. Read the following sentences. Find the sentences in which the modal verb ‘must’ expresses supposition. Translate them into Russian.

  1. This phenomenon must be described in detail.

  2. The temperature must have been specified before.

  3. I must have observed that experiment before.

  4. This effect must have caused some change in the atomic structure.

  5. Some new considerations must be involved into this study,

  6. This evidence must provide some new facts.

  7. This value must have been included into the above considerations.

  8. They must have referred to the figures above.

  9. These phenomena must be distinguished carefully.

XII. Find the sentences with modal verbs in text 2 a (passages 2 and 3). Change these modal verbs to their equivalents. Translate the sentences into Russian.

XIII. Fill in blanks with the appropriate modal verb or its equivalent. Mind the tense.

XIV. A. Read the conversation. Choose the correct modal verb.

A: Hello! What’s your name, please?

B: My name’s Helen.

A: How do you feel must, can and may in your daily activities, Helen?

B: Well, it depends on the day and on the activities.

A: What do you mean?

B: On weekdays, I feel deeply must, sometimes may and most often

can. On Sundays, I feel deeply may, but sometimes I feel must again

and can or can’t.

A: Oh, but still what do you mean by that?

B: On weekdays I have 3-4 classes and labs. I (must / may) get up at 7

o’clock. I (must / may) take some meal and (must / can) leave home. I (should / can) get to the University on foot, but I seldom do it. I (shouldn’t / mustn’t) be late. I (am able to / must) come some minutes to nine, so I take a bus to get on time. I (must/may) be active in class. I (can / must) stay in University till 13.30. At 11.30 we (may / need) have lunch. I want to become an engineer, so I (must / may) do all this.

On Sunday I (am to / may) do whatever I like. I (am allowed to / may) sleep late if I like. I (should / may) stay at home, or go to a cinema. I feel deeply must on Sundays too. I feel that I (will / must) study physics or theoretical mechanics and I say that I can do it.
