Text II. OVERHEAD CONVEYORS
Next to belt conveyors, overhead conveying systems are by far the most important piece of equipment. Their main advantage is that they occupy space that, in most cases, would otherwise re-main unused. There are other onsiderations, such as their simplicity of design, plus flexibility of routing and the fact that different work levels can be served by one and the same continuous system. Also, they are not rigid schemes; if required, they can fairly readily be re-arranged to suit any proposed new machinery or assembly line layout, unlike various other conveying systems that are fixed to suit a particular layout.
An overhead conveyor generally consists of a power propelled chain travelling at moderate speed, suspended from trolleys running on an I-beam or other suitable track, and provided with attachments of various forms adapted to the work to be done. The chain has a fixed path but it can negotiate horizontal and vertical curves easily. The loads are not concentrated as in the tram-rail system, and so the track is much lighter. The motor is usually connected by roller chain or V-belt to a vertical-type worm gear or through a variable speed drive which permits adjustments to suit varying operating conditions.
A wide range of capacities is available to handle loads up to several thousand pounds. Unit loads are usually carried on trays, hooks, baskets or suspension systems.
Automatic load and unload stations are often designed to increase the utility of the conveyor.
