3.3. Lexicon.

Vocabulary furnished evidence of a common origin for the Gmc languages in that a number of the basic words in these languages are similar in form.

Besides, the Gmc languages have a number of unique vocabulary items, words to which there are no certain correspondences in other IE languages. Among these words peculiar to Gmc are nautical terms: ship, sail, boat, sea, etc. Others include such Modern English words as rain, drink, drive, broad, hold, wife, meat, fowl.
