Стремительное развитие науки и техники, а также расширение экономических и культурных связей обусловило необходимость эффективного обмена информацией между всеми странами мирового сообщества. Английский язык традиционно считался языком торговли, политики, спорта и науки, но с появлением компьютеров и всемирной сети Internet он приобрел статус поистине международного. Согласно статистическим данным, около 80% Internet-сайтов и 75% научной литературы написано на английском языке. Стремительное развитие добычи нефти и газ, а также поиск и разработка новых запасов этого топлива создает спрос на специалистов, способных эффективно работать в любой стране. Поэтому современный специалист по бурению газо-нефтянных скважин должен не только быть компетентным в своей области знаний, но и уметь получать знания и навыки путем ознакомления с новыми достижениями и разработками в этой области.

Данные методические указания преследуют цель научить студента пользоваться общими и специальными словарями и справочниками при чтении и переводе научно-технической литературы. Благодаря упражнениям, приведенным после текстов, студент сможет усвоить базовые термины из своей области науки, выделить ключевые слова в тексте, закрепить старые и получить новые знания по грамматике, которые позволяют правильно строить высказывание на иностранном языке, а также научиться грамотно излагать содержание специального текста.

Для того, чтобы правильно выполнить предложенные грамматические упражнения, студенту необходимо повторить следующие темы: образование времен активного и пассивного залогов, порядок слов в английском предложении, предложения условия и времени, типы вопросов. При чтении текста нужно обращать внимание на сочетаемость слов и предлоги.

My Future Specialty

I study at North Caucasus State Technical University . I’m a second-year student of Oil & Gas department by specialty oil wells drilling.

The Oil and Gas department/faculty was established in 1995. The faculty is engaged in training highly qualified engineers in several specialties.

Оn graduating from the University I’d like to work as an engineer on drilling or petroleum engineer. My future job will be connected with oil & gas, drilling of oil wells and oil production. Actually petroleum is a very important raw material for all industry branches almost in all the countries. Oil production plays a significant role in the development of our national economy.

There are many areas of specialization in petroleum engineering. After a new reservoir has been discovered, drilling engineers are responsible for well drilling process and preparing them for production. Engineer’s efforts during this stage should be concentrated on keeping drilling costs to a minimum. The completed well should be capable for efficient production of oil or gas.

A modern engineer on drilling has to know the principlеs of geology. He must also know tectonics, stratigraphy, regional geology, mineralogy and all methods of drilling technique.

There are also engineers on design, plan and supervise of drilling operations, production engineers, log engineers & reservoir engineers. All petroleum engineers must do economic evaluations and define which of several options will give the best results. Physical geology or tectonics studies the physical processes that take place on & inside the earth, giving the earth crust rocks their composition & structure.

After the university we can work at different drilling companies and at drilling sites or derricks, at oil & gas scientific-research institutes and labs. At drilling sites

we can work as drilling foremen or drilling foreman assistants as well as petroleum

engineers.

Preparing to drill

Once the site has been selected, it must be surveyed to determine its boundaries, and environmental impact studies may be done. Lease agreements, titles and right-of way accesses for the land must be obtained and evaluated legally. For off-shore sites, legal jurisdiction must be determined. After all legal issues have been settled, the crew goes about preparing the land. The first step is to clear and level the land and then access roads may be built. Because water is used in drilling, there must be a source of water nearby. If there is no natural source, it’s necessary to drill а water well. Then a reserve pit should be dug, which is used to dispose of rock cuttings and drilling mud during the drilling process, and is lined with plastic to protect the environment. If the site is an ecologically sensitive area, such as a marsh or wilderness, then the cuttings and mud must be disposed offsite by trucking it away instead of placed in a pit. When the area has been prepared, several holes must be drilled to make way for the rig and the main hole. A rectangular pit, called a cellar, is dug around the location of the actual drilling hole. The cellar provides a work space around the hole for the workers and drilling accessories. The crew then begins drilling the main hole, often with a small drill truck rather than the main rig. The first part of the hole is larger and shallower than the main portion, and is lined with a large-diameter conductor pipe. Additional holes are dug off to the side to temporarily store equipment -- when these holes are finished, the rig equipment can be brought in and set up.

Oil rig main systems and units

Depending upon the remoteness of the drill site and its access, equipment may be transported to the site by truck, helicopter or barge. Some rigs are built on ships or barges for work on inland water where there is no foundation to support a rig (as in marshes or lakes). Once the equipment is at the site, the rig is set up. Here are the main systems and units of a land oil rig:

1. Power system consists of large diesel engines, which burn diesel-fuel oil to provide the main source of power and electrical generators, powered by the diesel engines to provide electrical power.

2. Mechanical system, driven by electric motors, includes hoisting system, which is used for lifting heavy loads, a mechanical winch or so called drawworks with a large steel cable spool, a block-and-tackle pulley and a receiving storage reel for the cable and turntable – a part of the drilling apparatus.

3. Rotating equipment is used for rotary drilling which consists of:

– swivel, a large handle that holds the weight of the drill string that allows the

string to rotate and makes a pressure-tight seal on the hole;

– kelly, which is four or six-sided pipe that transfers rotary motion to the

turntable and drill string;

– turntable or rotary table which drives the rotating motion using power from

electric motors;

– drill string consists of drill pipe (connected sections of about 30 ft / 10 m) and drill collars (larger diameter, heavier pipe that fits around the drill pipe and places weight on the drill bit);

– drill bit(s) is at the end of a drill that actually cuts up the rock and it comes in

many shapes and is made from different materials like tungsten carbide steel, diamond that are used for various drilling tasks and rock formations.

Casing is a large-diameter concrete pipe that lines the drill hole, prevents the hole from collapsing, and allows drilling mud to circulate through the circulation system.

Circulation system pumps drilling mud (mixture of water, clay, weighting material and chemicals, used to lift rock cuttings from the drill bit to the surface) under pressure through the kelly, rotary table, drill pipes. It includes pumps, sucking mud from the mud pits and pumping it to the drilling apparatus by pipes and hoses which connect drilling apparatus.

Mud-return line is used to returns mud from hole.

Shale shaker or shaker/sieve is used to separate rock cuttings from the mud and

shale slide conveys cuttings to the reserve pit which is used to collect rock cut-

tings separated from the mud. Mud-mixing hopper is the place where new mud is

mixed and then sent to the mud pits, the place where drilling mud is mixed and

recycled.

Derrick is a support structure that holds the drilling apparatus. It is tall enough to allow new sections of drill pipe to be added to the drilling apparatus as drilling progresses. Blowout preventer - high-pressure valves (located under the land rig or on the sea floor) that seal the high-pressure drill lines and relieve pressure when necessary to prevent a blowout (uncontrolled gush of gas or oil to the surface, often associated with fire). A drilling rig

A drilling rig or an oil rig is a structure housing equipment used to drill and extract oil or natural gas from underground reservoirs.

The term can refer to a land-based rig or a marine-based structure commonly called an “off-shore rig”. The term correctly refers to the equipment that drills the oil well including the rig derrick (which looks like a metal frame tower). Laymen also refer to the structure upon which the rig sits and from which the wells produce as a 'rig', but this is not correct. The correct name for the structure in an marine environment is the platform.

A structure upon which wells produce is a production platform. A floating vessel upon which a drilling rig sits is a floating rig or semi-submersible rig because the whole purpose of the structure is for drilling.

Drilling rigs can be vast, capable of drilling through thousands of meters of the Earth's crust. Large "mud pumps" are used to circulate drilling mud (liquid bentonite clay with high barium content) through the drill bit and the casing, for cooling and removing the "cutting" whilst a well is drilled. The hoists in the rig can lift thousands of tons of pipe and other equipment can force acid or sand into reservoirs to facilitate extraction of the oil. There is a permanent living accommodation and catering for crews which may be greater than a hundred people in number on the rig. Marine rigs may operate many hundreds of miles off-shore with infrequent crew rotation.

The drilling and production of oil and gas have some safety risks like a hazard to the environment from the ignition of the entrained gas causing dangerous fires

and also some risks of oil leakage polluting water, land and groundwater. For these reasons, special safety systems and highly-trained personnel are required by law in all countries with significant oil production.

Derrick

Drilling equipment is a complex of equipment designated for well drilling. The main rig components are derrick, substructures, drawworks, rotary table, mud pumps, prime movers and auxiliary equipment such as crownblock, swivel, hook, bits(drills), rotary hose, drilling line and so on.

Derrick is a four sided pyramidal structure of square cross section. The function of the derrick is to provide a vertical clearance required for drill string lifting and lowering into and out of well during the drilling operations. It should be of sufficient height and strength to carry out all the operations.

There are derricks of two general types, standard and portable. A standard derrick is a framework over an oil well and is erected part by part. A portable derrick or mast is a construction that can be erected as a unit. The derrick is installed on a substructure. It is from 18 to 53 m high, but drilling derricks are usually 42, 53 m high. To facilitate rapid erection of drilling equipment and travel from one well location to another, the derrick may be replaced by a braced mast of unitary construction. Usually the mast is designed to facilitate its disassembly or component parts folding. They are small and light enough to be transported on trucks or tractors. These masts can be transported to a new well location and make ready for drilling service. It will take not too much time to erect and install such standard steel derrick.

The substructure is a support on which the derrick is rested. It must be of sufficient strength able to bear the proper loads providing 100% safety operation. Substructures are different in their dimensions depending on the type and weight of drilling equipment on them as well as on the quantity of control devices which are mounted too. Substructures may be made of concrete and metal.
