Exercise 236. Translate into Russian and comment on the use of the modal verb need.

1. Don’t forget to bring the journal. I need it for my report.

2. You needn’t answer me now, Take your time.

3. Do you need my help?

4. Do you need these notes.

5. Ben, I need help.

6. You needn’t have gone into so many details.

7. We’ve got plenty of time. You don’t need to hurry.

8. I can hear you quite clearly. You needn’t shout.

9. Ann bought some eggs but when she got home she found that she already had plenty of eggs. So she needn’t have bought any eggs.

10. Thank you for doing the washing-up but you needn’t have done it really. I was going to do it later.

Exercise 239. Fill in: needn’t have or didn’t need/didn’t have to, don’t need/don’t have to/needn’t.

“Have you seen Modern Families yet?” Paul asked Mary as he was checking through the cinema listing.

“I saw it last night,” she replied.

“I needn’t have gone (go) through – I already knew what it would be like.”

“Did you like it?”

“Not really. The director (spend) so much money presenting such a weak story. It’s a good thing I (pay) to get in.”

“How did you manage that?” asked Paul.

“I went with Tom,” she answered.

“Critics (pay) to see films you know.”

“How was the acting?”

“Well, the director (hire) such good actors for a film like that,” said Mary.

Exercise 240. Choose the right variant – mustn’t or needn’t.

Exercise 242. Translate into Russian and compare the use of the modal verbs need and should in the meaning of necessity/absence of necessity.

1. You should not have done it yourself: all you had to do is ask me.

2. You need not have paid your debt so soon. I do not need this money so urgently.

3. You should not give the child so much care. It may make him dependent on your attention. He should be more self-confident.

4. You needn't have come so early. Now you will have to wait until four o'clock.

5. I am sorry, I should not have told you that: it has upset you so much!

6. You need not have carried this luggage yourself: there were a lot of porters around here.

Exercise 243. Translate into English using need.

1. Вам не надо отвечать на все вопросы.

2. На незачем ездить так далеко. Можно ходить в бассейн рядом со школой.
