Род
Сравните: В русском языке существительное (одушевленное и неодушевленное) имеет три рода: мужской (мальчик, стол — он), женский (девочка, лампа — она) и средний (дитя, кресло - оно). В английском языке все существительные (неодушевленные и одушевленные, кроме тех, которые обозначают людей) принадлежат к одному роду — среднему и поэтому в единственном числе заменяются одним местоимением it, которое можно переводить словами он, она, оно в зависимости от рода существительного в русском языке, например:
book — it (она),
table — it (он),
dog — it (она),
window — it (оно).
Число
1. Множественное число существительных образуется прибавлением окончания -s к существительному в единственном числе. При этом надо помнить, что -s произносится звонко [z] после звонких согласных и глухо [s] после глухих согласных:
girl – girls, desk - desks
2. Если существительное в единственном числе оканчивается на -s, -ss, -х,
-sh, -ch или гласную, тогда прибавляется окончание -es, которое всегда произносится как [iz], например:
class - classes, box – boxes, potato - potatoes
Примечание
а) Если существительное в ед.числе оканчивается на -f, то при образовании мн. числа -f меняется на -v и прибавляется окончание -es, например:
leaf – leaves, shelf - shelves;
б) если существительное оканчивается на -у (после согласной), то -у меняется на -i и прибавляется окончание -еs, например:
cherry - cherries
3. В составных существительных форму множественного числа принимает смыслообразующее слово:
passer-by (пешеход) – passers-by
4. Ряд существительных образуют мн. число не по общему правилу. Запомните некоторые из них:
man - men,
woman - women,
child - children,
foot - feet,
tooth - teeth,
goose - geese,
mouse - mice,
Некоторые существительные – заимствования из латинского и греческого языков:

Падеж
1. Общий падеж (the common case)
Сравните: Существительные в русском языке имеют шесть падежей, которые образуются путем изменения окончания существительного. Благодаря падежам мы определяем связь между словами и таким образом понимаем смысл предложения. В современном английском языке существительное имеет только одну форму — общий падеж. Это значит, что существительное в предложении остается неизменным, а связь его с другими словами осуществляется с помощью предлогов, которые используются перед существительным в общем падеже, например:
about a friend — о друге, with a friend — с другом, for a friend — для друга
Но иногда предлог не переводится, он только указывает на нужный падеж, например:
to travel by plane – путешествовать самолетом,
to write in pencil — писать карандашом,
to strike with a stone — ударить камнем.
2. Притяжательный падеж ( the possessive case)
Существует еще одна форма существительного — притяжательная, которая образуется прибавлением к существительному в общем падеже апострофа ' с буквой s — 's. Раньше эту форму принимали только одушевленные существительные, и она выражала принадлежность какого-то предмета кому-то, например:
Tom's book,
a boy's dog.
В современном английском языке эту форму могут принимать и неодушевленные существительные, например:
the machine's parameters — параметры машины,
the government's policy — политика правительства.
Примечание
Существительные, обозначающие дни недели, время суток и имеющие притяжательную форму, могут переводиться прилагательными, например:
today's newspaper — сегодняшняя газета,
yesterday's news — вчерашние новости,
night's work — ночная работа.
Если в притяжательную форму ставится существительное во мн. числе (а это значит, что у него уже есть окончание -s, второе ни требуется), то используется только один апостроф, например:
the students' book — книга студентов, the boys' dog — собака.
Существительные, образующие мн. число без окончания -s, принимают окончание 's , например:
women's rights — права женщин
men's duty — долг (обязанность) людей.
Как видно из всех примеров, за существительными в притяжательной форме стоит существительное в общем падеже, и именно с него надо начинать перевод этого словосочетания:
the Earth 's population — население Земли,
my brothers' friends — друзья моих братьев.
Функции существительного в предложении
Мы знаем, что существует пять основных членов предложения: подлежащее, сказуемое, дополнение, определение, обстоятельство. В английском языке существительное может играть роль любого члена предложения.
