In the
1860s Elena Molokhovets published her classic Podarok
molodym khozyaikam (Gift
to Young Housewives)
which
was over 1,000 pages long, immensely popular among housekeepers and
is still considered a kitchen bible by Russia’s home cooks. The
tragic irony is that the author of this classic died of starvation in
Soviet Russia in 1918, during the Civil War.
