Ex. 1. Read and translate the words into Russian.
Republic, declaration, federation, territory, vice-president, army, person, residence, congress, senator, preamble, bill, police, arrest, structure, function, competence, conflict.
Ex. 2. Translate into Russian. Define the parts of the speech.

Ex. 3. Translate the word-combinations into Russian.
The independence of the USA, the capital of the country, a government of three branches, the legislative branch of the government, the duties of the president, the elections of the vice-president, the Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy of the USA, the office of president, the official residence of the president, the House of Representatives, the executive body of the USA, a term of four years, the Constitution of the USA, arrest of a person, permission of a court.
Ex. 4. Open the brackets and put the verbs into the right forms. Define the Voice of the verbs.

Ex. 5. Put the following statements into indirect speech.
Model: My colleague said: "I study the fingerprints of that man".

The police officer said: "I will tell you this information tomorrow".
The accused said: "I can not afford to have an attorney".
My friend said: "I have to finish the investigation".
The judge said: "We have no sufficient evidence".
The man said: "I saw that woman in the crime scene".
Ex. 6. Translate the sentences into Russian. Pay attention to using of sequence of tenses of the verbs.
He says that he lived in Kiev.
He said that he lived in Kiev.
He said that he had lived in Kiev.
The students knew what they would prepare for examinations.
The teacher knows that all the students are present at the lesson.
The teacher knew that everybody was at the English lesson.
He thought that his friend would work the following week.
