The First Giant of the Air

1. When most people hear the name of Leonardo da Vinci they think of the wonderful paintings in the best world museums. But his genious was manysided and remarkable. He was one of the greatest artists and scientists in the history of the world. He had a lot of sketches for a submarine, heavy artillery, naval rocket missiles, armoured cars, the first practical parachute and helicopter and many other things.

2. Leonardo da Vinci was the first man to make a scientific study of bird flight. "A bird is an instrument", he observed, "Working to mathematical laws. He discovered many of these laws. He learned how birds balanced themselves, soared in spirals to gain height, flew with and against the wind. He was the first man to understand the main principles of flight control. He realized that a bird's wing compresses air beneath it, which gives it lift.

3 Leonardo da Vinci might well have been the first man to fly. When he was a child, an eagle flew over his bed. It hovered over the boy and then with a tremendous beaking of the wings it rose and flew away. This was the boy's earliest memory. He never forgot it. Even as a boy, he was determined to master the air.

4 When he died, his blue-prints were lost, hidden or sold. They were not collected and published in one book until the end of the 19th century. But then other men had re-discovered all that he had known four hundred years before. But his work had at least one very definite result. It directly inspired Igor Sikorsky, a Russian, to make the first really successful helicopter. ,

Metals

In general metals are solids with a metallic luster, conductors of electricity, malleable, and of high physical strength. In compound form, the metals have positive valences. Probably, their most important characteristic is that when used as a metal they are usually in elemental form or alloyed with other metals.

The metals long used by mankind - iron, copper, zinc, mercury, silver and gold - are those which exist as easily recognized minerals in large deposits and which are easily reduced from compounds to elemental forms.

The most important metal, iron, is both prevalent and easily reduced to metallic form. In more recent times some of the most naturally prevalent metals that ire difficult to reduce have become common and readily available due to the development of electrochemical processes for their production. These include aluminium, magnesium and sodium.

The metals occur most commonly as oxides or sulphides in ores that contain such materials as clay, silica, granite, etc. from which the metal compounds must be separated.

Since only a few of the metals, such as copper, gold, silver, platinum and bismuth exist in elemental form, the chief problem is that of reducing them from compound to elemental form.

Задание 11. Исправьте предложения на основе текста.

1. The metals can't occur as sulphides in ore, platinum and bismuth existing in pure form.

2. Zink and copper are hardly recognized minerals.

3. Gold can be used alloyed with other metals.
