Objectives

The learner will be able to:

Describe roles and responsibilities in an organisation.Welcome people on various occasions in an organisation.

5.1 Describing Job Responsibilities

5.1.1 Conversation

Listen to the interview with Sue Chang who has been an art director for the past 15 years. Interviewer: What do you most enjoy about your job?

Sue: I like the challenges my work provides. The variation in the tasks makes my day exciting and action–packed. We design everything, right from the produce price signs to bathroom signs and neon signs.

Interviewer: What’s a typical day like for you?

Sue: People throughout the company send down work orders and these have different priorities. There are email to answer, meetings to arrange and to attend. It’s hard to find time to do the really creative work, so we have a ‘closed door’ hour, twice a day, so we can concentrate.

Interviewer: What is most challenging about being an art director?

Sue: As an art director, I’m responsible for what my coworkers put out. I work with them to have a consistent style and look for all the material that we put out, a consistent level of expertise. Since I am in charge of quality, my objective is to meet if not exceed, our client’s expectations. It’s a big

challenge because at times we need to work with tight deadlines to achieve targets and this may force us to compromise on creativity.

Interviewer: What’s the most common misconception about being an art director?

Sue: There’s a lot of hard work involved; it’s not just drawing a pretty picture. At times you have to deal with very demanding and difficult clients who make you redo things many times. Sometimes the design gets rejected repeatedly and at other times it’s rejected for reasons that are hard to understand. You have to work within those constraints and have the stamina to keep working through a design even if it reflects the judgments of other people more than your own.

Interviewer: What skills are most important for this job?

Sue: You absolutely need to know the basic programs such as Photoshop, a page layout program and Web layout. And you have to work hard and be able to cope with pressure.

5.1.2 Exercise

Based on the interview, state whether the following sentences are true or false.

6.2 Tourist Destinations

Have you gone abroad for a holiday? Where did you go? How was the experience?

6.2.1 Conversation

Steve Dale is a musician who now lives in the UK. Listen to him talk about his native country. Interviewer: Hi Steve! Where are you from?

Steve: I am from New Zealand, a land where there are more sheep than people. Interviewer: Really! I didn’t know that! What else is special about New Zealand?

Steve: Oh there are a lot of things that make New Zealand unique. For example Gisborne, a city in New Zealand, is the first city in the world to see the sun each morning. Also, since it’s so isolated, it was the last country in the world to be populated by humans. It has a population of just 4 million

people.

Interviewer: That’s it? What about the New Zealand economy?

Steve: Well, agriculture is a major industry in New Zealand. The manufacturing and fishing sectors are also growing steadily. In recent times, tourism has become a major source of income as there are close to two million visitors every year.

Interviewer: So what is there for people to see in New Zealand?

Steve: New Zealand has a unique landscape and an unrivalled variety of landforms. The country runs roughly north-south with mountain ranges down much of its length. There are two main islands, the North Island and the South Island, with a third smaller island in the South, Stewart Island. In a couple of day’s drive, you can see everything from snow-topped mountain ranges to sandy beaches, lush rainforests, glaciers and fiords and active volcanoes. You can also enjoy many outdoor pursuits such as skiing, diving, hiking, kayaking, horse riding and sailing.

Interviewer: Is the wildlife here as different as Australia’s, your neighbour?

Steve: Since the ecology developed in isolation, the wildlife here is unique. You’ll be surprised to know that we have no snakes on the island and there are almost no poisonous or dangerous animals in the wild. Also, there are more flightless bird species here than anywhere else.

Interviewer: That’s quite interesting. I didn’t know that! How do you find living in Britain compared with being in New Zealand?

Steve: I like it here in the UK. There are so many big cities, roads and beautiful buildings everywhere. I am also fascinated by its rich and diverse culture. There is so much to learn here. New Zealand is just natural wilderness. You can go for miles and miles and not meet a single human being. However, there is one thing I miss about New Zealand and that is no matter where you live, you are probably less than an hour from the ocean and less than 4 hours from a ski field. Which means on the same day you can mountain bike, snowboard and surf!

6.2.2 Exercise

Based on Steve’s interview, state whether the following statements are true or false.

1.There are more sheep than people in New Zealand. _________ (True/False)

2.It was the first country in the world to be populated by humans. _________ (True/

False)

3.Agriculture is a major industry in New Zealand.

_________ (True/False)

6.2.3 Exercise

Listen to Steve’s interview again and answer these questions.

1.How many people live in New Zealand?

2.What makes New Zealand unique?

3.What are the main industries of New Zealand?

4.How is the wildlife unique in New Zealand? Why?

4.There are lots of snakes in this country. 5. How is New Zealand different from Europe?

_________ (True/False)

5.Steve does not like it in the UK. _________

(True/False)
